Top-Seeded Hoyas Face Sixth-Seeded Creighton in BIG EAST Championship

WASHINGTON – The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer squad will take on the sixth-seeded Creighton University Bluejays in the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday morning scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. The game will be broadcast live on FS1 with John Fanta, Monika Moore and Meghan Caffrey on the broadcast.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas advanced to the championship on a 2-1 overtime victory over fourth-seeded Butler on Thursday evening.
  • Freshman Jack Panayotou scored both goals for the Blue & Gray including the game winner in overtime as GU advanced.
  • Georgetown is 11-4-3 overall and won its eighth regular season championship earlier this fall which clinched the top seed in the conference tournament.
  • On Wednesday,senior captain Aidan Rocha earned BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors marking the fourth-consecutive season a Hoya has won it, while senior captain Daniel Wu captured Defensive Player of the Year as GU managed its fifth-consecutive defensive honor. Rocha and  Wu were also named First Team All-BIG EAST.
  • Juniors Ryan Schewe and Marlon Tabora earned spots on the second team, while GU boasted a league-high three people on the third team including junior captain Kenny Nielsen, sophomore Kieran Sargeant and freshman Jack Panayotou.
  • Additionally, the Georgetown staff received BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second-consecutive season.
  • GU closed out the regular season with a 1-0 victory at UConn. The Hoyas had a bye in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.
  • For their efforts, Panayotou was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, and Schewe earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
  • Tabora and Panayotou currently lead the team in scoring with 17 points apiece. Panayotou has tallied seven goals with three assists, while Tabora has five goals and seven assists. Freshman Jacob Murrell boasts 14 points on five goals and four assists to round out the top three.
About the Bluejays
  • The Bluejays are 8-4-6 on the season and advanced to the championship game on a 6-0 victory over second-seeded Seton Hall on Thursday evening.
  • Behind four goals from the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Duncan McGuire, the Bluejays routed the Pirates and tied a BIG EAST postseason record for goals in a game by an individual.
  • On Wednesday, seven Bluejays earned All-BIG EAST honors along with McGuire's Offensive Player of the Year award.
  • Joining McGuire on the All-BIG EAST First Team were senior midfielder Charles Auguste and sophomore defender Owen O'Malley. Sophomore Jackson Castro earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors, while Paul Kruse, Giorgio Probo and Callum Watson collected All-BIG EAST Third Team.

  • The Hoyas are 8-3-2 all-time against the Bluejays and only met twice before in the postseason.
  • Earlier this season, the Blue & Gray came away with a 2-1 win at Shaw Field over Creighton.
  • Murrell and Wu both scored before CU added one in the 69th minute.
  • Georgetown is 2-0-0 all-time against the Bluejays in the postseason defeating them 1-0 in the 2021 spring semifinal, and 2-1 in overtime in the 2015 championship game.

  • The Hoyas are 22-20-6 overall in the BIG EAST Championship and 5-9-1 at a neutral site as well as 5-5-0 in the championship.
  • The winner of Sunday's game will earn the BIG EAST's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
