WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team earned three BIG EAST Conference major awards and seven total all-conference honors on Wednesday when the league announced its postseason awards. Additionally, the Georgetown staff received BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second-consecutive season.
Senior captain
Aidan Rocha earned Midfielder of the Year honors marking the fourth-consecutive season a Hoya has won it, while senior captain
Daniel Wu captured Defensive Player of the Year as GU managed its fifth-consecutive defensive honor. Rocha and Wu were also named First Team All-BIG EAST. Juniors
Ryan Schewe and
Marlon Tabora earned spots on the second team, while GU boasted a league-high three people on the third team including junior captain
Kenny Nielsen, sophomore
Kieran Sargeant and freshman
Jack Panayotou.
After winning the regular season crown last week, marking GU's eighth in program history, the Hoyas will play nearby hosting the BIG EAST Championship semifinal game on Thursday, November 10 at the Maryland SoccerPlex against fourth-seeded Butler.
Aidan Rocha
Midfielder of the Year, First Team All-BIG EAST
- Rocha has started all 16 games he has appeared in and ranks fourth on the squad in scoring with three goals and as many assists for nine points.
- The team captain has a pair of game winners on the season.
- He transitioned to the midfield early this season after beginning on the backline.
- It marks Georgetown's fourth-consecutive BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year award after Jacob Montes won it in 2019 and Dante Polvara earned the honor the past two seasons.
Daniel Wu
Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-BIG EAST
- Wu has started all 15 games he has appeared in this season with one goal on the season.
- The senior is part of a defense that has posted six shutouts this year.
- The captain was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on 10/24 and earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on 9/26.
- He was the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection.
- This is Wu's second-career postseason award after being named Second Team All-BIG EAST a season ago.
- This is Georgetown's fifith-consecutive BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year award with Sean Zawadzki winning it last year, Rio Hope-Gund the year prior and Dylan Nealis earning the title twice.
Ryan Schewe
Second Team All-BIG EAST
- Schewe has started all 11 games he appeared in after taking over the starting role midway through the season.
- The junior has a record of 9-0-1 with six shutouts on the year.
- He boasts a 0.57 goals-against average ranking him seventh in the country and first in the league. This goes along with a 0.878 save percentage to sit at number two in the nation.
- The goalkeeper has 43 saves this season.
- Schewe was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on 10/26 after earning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors a few days prior. He was also selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season (10/3 & 10/31).
- This is his first-career honor on the Hilltop.
Marlon Tabora
Second Team All-BIG EAST
- Tabora leads the team in scoring with five goals and six assists on the season for 16 points.
- He has appeared in all 17 games with three starts to his credit.
- Tabora managed a goal and an assist in a win over Seton Hall this season as well as two assists in a victory over Temple during nonconference play.
- The junior earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors on 10/10 and 10/24 this season.
- This is his first-career honor on the Hilltop.
Kenny Nielsen
Third Team All-BIG EAST
- Nielsen has started all 17 games for the Hoya defense.
- The team captain scored a goal in the season opener at Pitt.
- The junior is part of a defense that has posted six shutouts this year.
- This is his second-career honor on the Hilltop after being named to the Third Team a season ago.
Kieran Sargeant
Third Team All-BIG EAST
- Sargeant has started all 17 games on the backline.
- He has one goal and five assists for seven points on the year.
- The sophomore is part of a defense that has posted six shutouts this year.
- He was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on 10/17.
- This is his first-career postseason honor.
Jack Panayotou
Third Team All-BIG EAST
- Panayotou is third on the squad in scoring with five goals and three assists to his credit.
- He has appeared in 15 games with 12 starts after missing two contests to join the U-19 US Men's National Team for a tournament this fall.
- Panayotou managed a goal and an assist in the win over Temple this year and has three game winners on the books tying him for second in the conference.
- The freshman was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on 9/5.
- This is his first-career honor on the Hilltop.
BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year
- Head Coach Brian Wiese, Assistant Coaches Mike Casper and Connor Klekota and Volunteer Assistant Coach Brian Bouhl were named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year by the league's coaches.
- This is the eighth time in Georgetown history that GU has earned the honor and the sixth time under Wiese (2022, 2021, 2019, 2015, 2013, 2010).
