Top-Seeded Hoyas Face Fourth-Seeded Butler in BIG EAST Semifinals

WASHINGTON – The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer squad will face the fourth-seeded Butler University Bulldogs in a BIG EAST Championship Semifinal matchup on Thursday evening scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with John Fanta, Monika Moore and Meghan Caffrey on the broadcast.

About the Hoyas;
  • Georgetown is 10-4-3 overall and won its eighth regular season championship earlier this fall which clinched the top seed in the conference tournament.
  • On Wednesday, senior captain Aidan Rocha earned BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors marking the fourth-consecutive season a Hoya has won it, while senior captain Daniel Wu captured Defensive Player of the Year as GU managed its fifth-consecutive defensive honor. Rocha and Wu were also named First Team All-BIG EAST.
  • Juniors Ryan Schewe and Marlon Tabora earned spots on the second team, while GU boasted a league-high three people on the third team including junior captain Kenny Nielsen, sophomore Kieran Sargeant and freshman Jack Panayotou.
  • Additionally, the Georgetown staff received BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second-consecutive season.
  • GU closed out the regular season with a 1-0 victory at UConn last Wednesday. The Hoyas had a bye in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.
  • For their efforts, Panayotou was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, and Schewe earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
  • Tabora currently leads the team in scoring with five goals and six assists for 16 points on the season. He is followed by a pair of freshmen as Jacob Murrell boasts 14 points (5G, 4A) and Panayotou has 13 points on the season with five goals and three assists.
About the Bulldogs
  • The Bulldogs are 10-5-3 on the season and finished with a mark of 4-3-3 in the BIG EAST Conference.
  • On Wednesday, three Bulldogs earned All-BIG EAST honors as Palmer Ault was unanimously chosen BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.
  • Joining Ault on the All-BIG EAST First Team was Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., while Jack Haywood was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
  • Butler defeated fifth-seeded Providence 3-0 on Saturday to advance to the semifinals.

  • The Hoyas are 8-1-1 all-time against the Bulldogs and have never played a neutral-site matchup..
  • Georgetown is 0-0-1 all-time against the Bulldogs in the postseason with the lone meeting coming in 2019 when the squads tied 2-2 in the semifinals, but GU advanced on penalty kicks.
  • Earlier this season, Georgetown won a wild one as the Hoyas held on for the 3-2 victory over Butler at the Sellick Bowl. The match began with a Hoya goal just 15 seconds in, but the back and forth affair ended on a Tabora tally in the 73rd minute.
BIG EAST Championship
  • The Hoyas are 21-20-6 overall in the BIG EAST Championship and 4-9-1 at a neutral site as well as 9-7-2 in the semifinal game.
  • The winner of Thursday's game will play in the championship against the winner of second-seeded Seton Hall and sixth-seeded Creighton on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.  The game will be broadcast live on FS1.
