Hoyas Defeat No. 16/19 Johns Hopkins in 2022 Season Opener

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's fourth-ranked men's lacrosse team defeated visiting No. 16/19 Johns Hopkins 16-8 in the 2022 season opener on Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field. The win is the first over the Blue Jays in program history.
 
Hoya Highlights  
How it Happened
  • After a back-and-forth start to the first quarter, Johns Hopkins took a 5-2 lead with 1:50 remaining in the frame.
  • Watson scored his first goal with seven seconds remaining the period to make it 5-3 after 15 minutes of action.
  • Georgetown's defense blanked Hopkins in the second quarter as Trippi, McDermott, Mazzone and Watson all found the back of the net to give the Blue & Gray a 7-5 lead going into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, three goals in the first five minutes of action gave GU a five-goal lead up 10-5 before the Blue Jays scored their first goal after a 25:07 scoreless drought.
  • With Hopkins trailing 11-7 going into the final quarter, the Hoyas scored five unanswered goals to put the game out of reach before JHU added a late goal with 3:54 remaining to salvage the 16-8 final score.
 
Johns Hopkins Notes
  • The Blue Jays fall to 2-1 on the season.
  • Brendan Grimes had three goals for Johns Hopkins while Connor DeSimone added a goal and three assists.
  • Joey Epstein had two goals, Jackson Raposo had a goal and an assist while Casey McDermott was responsible for the remaining goal.
  • Josh Kirson (2-1) had 12 saves in the loss for JHU.
 
Of Note
  • Georgetown has now won five-straight season openers dating back to 2018.
  • Reilly's 10 faceoff wins give him 468 for his career, passing former Hoya All-American Tyler Knarr for second all-time at Georgetown.
  • Smith's six ground balls give him 217 for his career, moving him past Steve Iorio for eighth all-time on the Hilltop.
