No. 3 Hoyas Battle to 10-8 Victory at No. 10/11 Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Georgetown University's third-ranked men's lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 10-8 road victory at No. 10/11 Penn at historic Franklin Field on Saturday afternoon. Battling their second-straight nationally ranked opponent – as well as biting cold temperatures – the Hoyas improved to 2-0 on the season and 3-0 all-time against the Quakers.

 About Georgetown
  • The Hoyas put on another strong defensive showing in the City of Brotherly Love, holding their second-straight foe to just eight goals on the day.
  • Will Bowen was credited with four caused turnovers on the day and was responsible for marking Penn's consensus preseason first team All-American Sam Handley, holding him to a lone goal on nine shots.
  • Gibson Smith IV added a caused turnover and collected six ground balls, while defensive midfielder Jack Leary and LSMs Alex Mazzone and Wallace Halpert forced a turnover each.
  • Owen McElroy had another impressive day between the pipes, collecting 11 saves in the win for the Blue & Gray, including a multitude of shots at point blank range.
  • On the offensive end, Graham Bundy Jr. paced Georgetown with two goals and two assists while Connor Morin added two goals and an assist, including scoring with just under two minutes to play to seal the win for the Hoyas.
  • Dylan Watson added two goals, Dylan Hess had a goal and an assist, Zachary Geddes, Colin Munro and James Reilly each found the back of the net and Alex Trippi chipped in an assist.
  • James Reilly put together another strong day at the X, winning 14-of-22 (.636) faceoffs on the day and collecting a game-high 11 ground balls to go with his goal. No two faceoff wins were bigger than Reilly cleanly winning the clamp after Penn pulled within one at 9-8 with 2:33 to play, and again easily retaining possession for the Hoyas following Morin's goal with 1:58 remaining.
Penn Highlights
  • The Quakers fall to 0-1 on the season.
  • Dylan Gergar led Penn with four goals while Cam Rubin added two goals and an assist.
  • Handley had two early assists to go with his third-quarter goal while Jack Schultz added the other goal for Penn.
  • Emmet Carrol had a strong showing in net for the Quakers, collecting 12 saves in the loss.
How it Happened
  • Georgetown got on the board first on a wrap-around goal from Morin at the 11:50 mark before the Quakers responded with a man-up goal 55 seconds later to even things up.
  • Penn would take its only lead of the game with the next goal before Reilly ripped an unsettled shot from a Morin helper to knot the game at 2-2.
  • A man-up goal from Munro and back-to-back scores from Bundy gave Georgetown a 5-2 lead after the first.
  • Georgetown's lone goal in the second quarter by Hess was bookended by a pair of Penn scores for a 6-4 halftime lead for the Blue & Gray.
  • Coming out of the break, Watson quickly tallied his two goals in the opening 2:31 of action before the Quakers responded with a pair to make it 8-6. Geddes then responded with a coast-to-coast clear and dodged multiple Penn defensemen in the crease to score and make it 9-6 after three.
  • In the fourth, an early goal from Penn cut its deficit to just two before pulling within one at the 2:33 mark. Reilly's faceoff win put the Hoyas in position to add Morin's cushion goal, and Reilly's win on the subsequent draw sealed the victory for Georgetown.
