Baseball Falls 6-4 to Rider in Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– The Georgetown University baseball team dropped its season opener to Rider, 6-4, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday. The Hoyas fall to 0-1 on the season while Rider jumps to 1-0.

"I was proud of our fight after being down 4-1 and coming back to tie the game late. Unfortunately, we didn't do enough early in the game offensively to score. I thought we played good enough defense to have a chance at the end and had the tying run at the plate. [Rider is] an NCAA Tournament team, a veteran team and I think it was great experience for us in that type of tight game. Hopefully, tomorrow we'll come out and get that execution we needed." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's game

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Collin Garner retired the side in order to open the game, striking out a pair in the first.
  • Andrew Ciufo smacked the team's first homer of the season and second of his career with a solo shot in the second to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
  • After a four-run third by Rider, GU threatened in the fifth with runners on second and third following a Jake Hyde double and an Ethan Stern walk, but were held off the board.
  • The duo of Carter Bosch and Angelo Tonas combined for 4.1 innings of relief and struck out five batters.
  • Georgetown worked three-straight walks to start the seventh, loading the bases before a fourth to Michael Eze drove in a run and cut the lead to two, 4-2. Ubaldo Lopez smacked a two-run single in the ensuing at-bat and tied the game at four.
  • Rider scored two in the top of the ninth to knock off the Hoyas, 6-4.

OF NOTE
  • Owen Carapellotti registered his first collegiate hit with a double to left in the second frame.
  • Ubaldo Lopez recorded his first RBI and hit in a Hoya uniform.
