SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Georgetown University's third-ranked men's lacrosse team defeated its third-straight nationally-ranked opponent with an impressive 16-11 victory at No. 4 Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas dominated the faceoff X and had another stellar showing between the pipes en route to the first win over the Fighting Irish since 2010.
Hoya Highlights
- The Hoyas improve to 3-0 on the season with wins over teams ranked No. 16, No. 10 and now No. 4 on the year.
- Owen McElroy tied his career high with 24 saves – the second-most in a single game in program history – to anchor the Georgetown defense.
- Despite an aggressive surge from the Irish coming out of halftime with five goals in the third quarter, the Hoya defense kept Notre Dame mostly in check the rest of the game.
- Notre Dame's Pat Kavanagh, a 2021 Tewaaraton Award Finalist and consensus first team preseason All-American, was held to just one goal on 10 ten shots behind the stalwart close defense of Will Bowen, James Donaldson and Gibson Smith IV as well as GU's rope units of Alex Mazzone, Zachary Geddes, Will Godine, Wallace Halpert, Jack Leary and Dylan Hess.
- James Reilly had yet another impressive day, winning 21 of 29 faceoffs and collecting 14 ground balls. His 21 faceoff wins are the fourth-most in a game in Georgetown history. He added an assist as well.
- Eight different Hoyas scored in the game, led by Declan McDermott with four goals and an assist. Connor Morin added three goals and an assist in his first game back in South Bend after transferring to the Hilltop for graduate school after graduating from Notre Dame.
- Dylan Watson had two goals and an assist, Graham Bundy Jr. and Hess both had two goals and Alex Trippi chipped in a goal with three assists.
- Bowen and Geddes each found the back of the cage as well while TJ Haley and Colin Munro both tallied assists.
Notre Dame Notes
- The Fighting Irish fall to 1-1 on the season.
- Morrison Mirer led the Irish with four goals while Chris Kavanagh and Eric Dobson both had two.
- Lima Entenmann had nine saves in goal in the loss.
How it Happened
- McDermott put the Hoyas on the board first at the 12:06 mark before Notre Dame responded just under four minutes later to tie things up.
- The Hoyas then posted five unanswered goals, and scored 10 of the next 11, to take an 11-2 lead over their hosts.
- Not giving up without a fight, the Irish clamped down and scored the last two goals of the half to cut the deficit to 11-4 at halftime before outscoring the Blue & Gray 5-0 in the third quarter to pull within two, down 11-9.
- The Irish made it a one-goal game with the first goal of the fourth to make it 11-10, but back-to-back goals from McDermott and Bundy 89 seconds apart put Georgetown back up 13-10.
- Notre Dame would find a way to score just once more at the 6:37 mark to make it 13-11, but consecutive goals from Morin put the game out of reach for his former running mates.
Of Note
- McElroy's 24 saves match his career high against Providence in 2021. His 24 saves are second most in a game in program history to Hall of Famer Jim Kenny's 29 against Drexel in 1989.
- Reilly's 21 faceoff wins are fourth-most in a game in program history. He also holds the program record with 26, set in 2021 against Marquette.
- With his 21 faceoff wins, Reilly now has 503 for his career, becoming just the second Hoya to eclipse 500 wins.
- Additionally, Reilly's 14 ground balls give him 287, moving him past Brodie Merrill for second-most all-time on the Hilltop.
