Hoyas Fall to No.17 Rutgers in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team fell 17-16 to the No. 17 Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the home opener at Cooper Field on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Hoyas fall to 1-1 on the young season, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 3-0.

How it Happened

  • The Hoyas opened the game with a commanding  7-2 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.  Four different Hoyas were able to find the back of the net in the first quarter with Ali Damond scoring twice, Annabelle Albert scoring three times and Tatum Geist scoring once. 

  •  The second quarter saw a run from Rutgers as they were able to tally five goals in the period. The Hoyas were able to continue on the offensive end as Ali Diamond was able to find the back of the net off of an assist from Mary Pagano in addition to Diamond assisting on two goals by Maley Starr and Jordyn Sabourin

  • After halftime, Rutgers opened the second half with a quick goal but was immediately followed by a goal from Kylie Hazen off of an assist from Emma Gebhardt. The rest of the third quarter saw a back and forth between the Hoyas and Scarlet Knights by way of goals from Annabelle Albert and Jordyn Sabourin. Later on, Rutgers closed the quarter with three consecutive goals to make the score 14-12 Hoyas to enter the fourth. 

  • The Scarlet Knights were able to outscore the Hoyas five to two in the fourth quarter to take the lead with a final score of 17-16.

 

Of Note

  • Senior Annabelle Albert was GU's top goal scorer with five goals. 

  • Senior Ali Diamond was able to record four goals and two assists for a total of six points on the day. 

  • GU was outshot 30-28 but led in total draw controls 24-13
