WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– The Georgetown University baseball team exploded offensively to pick up its first win of the season, downing the Lafayette University Leopards, 15-8, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Sunday. The Hoyas jump to 1-2 on the season while Lafayette falls to 0-4.
"First win of the year is just good for our guys, our staff and our organization. We challenged them to come out and compete at a high level on Sunday. Scoring six in the first inning never hurt anybody and offensively, we were relentless all day. It feels good to win. HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Andrew Ciufo extended his hitting streak to six games with his grand slam in the first inning. He finished the day with five RBIs and a run scored.
- Cam Meyer went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, two RBIs and three tallies.
- Jake Hyde also put forth a 3-for-5 showing at the dish with three singles and a run scored.
- Ethan Stern scored three times against his former team while Matt Stone and Michael Eze registered two apiece All three recorded an RBI against the Leopards.
- Georgetown loaded the bases in each of the first four innings, scoring 14 of the team's 15 runs over that span.
- Matthew Sapienza and Angelo Tonas tossed a combined four frames out of the pen, allowing one hit and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a solo home run by Lafayette in the opening frame, the Hoyas quickly responded with a six-run bottom of the first. Ciufo drilled a grand slam to left, marking his second homer of the weekend (4-1). Owen Carapellotti went back-to-back with the Hoya shortstop, hitting a solo shot to take a four-run lead (5-1). Eze finished the frame with an RBI single to left, bringing Matt Stone around to score (6-1).
- Georgetown tagged Lafayette with two of its next three runs on bases-loaded walks to Matt Stone and Evan Blum to take a 9-1 lead after three innings of play.
- Lafayette chipped away at the GU advantage with a three-spot in the top of the fourth (9-4).
- The Hoyas unloaded five of their own in the bottom half of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double to left by Cam Meyer (14-4).
- Following blank fifth and sixth frames, Adam Dapkewicz smacked a solo shot to take an 11-run lead (15-4).
- Lafayette scored two in both the eighth and ninth innings before the Hoyas secured the win, 15-8.
OF NOTE
- Ciufo became the first Hoya to hit a grand slam and record five or more RBIs in a game since Ryan M. Davis (6) against Richmond (02/18/20).
- Ciufo and Carapellotti are the first pair to hit back-to-back homers since Kai Nelson and Ryan P. Davis on March 19, 2019 against George Mason.
- The Hoyas smacked three or more homers in a game for the first time since hitting three against Navy (02/14/20).
