Bolden-Morris Makes History From the Court To the Gridiron

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University women's basketball player Milan Bolden-Morris made history on Tuesday as she was named a graduate assistant coach by Head Coach Jim Harbaugh with the University of Michigan football team. With the hiring, Bolden-Morris became the first female graduate assistant coach at a Big Ten school and the first at a major FBS program.

"I have always believed in providing opportunities for individuals who are passionate about football and Mimi (Bolden-Morris) is someone who has shown that drive to become a football coach," said Harbaugh. "Mimi reached out and expressed an interest in our graduate assistant positions when we had multiple openings this spring. We had some great conversations and I came away extremely impressed with her desire and ideas for coaching, and for making us better as a team. Mimi is a very bright, intelligent and competitive young woman who will be a great addition to our program and offensive coaching staff. We look forward to having Mimi transition into this role working with our quarterbacks. We can't wait to see the new perspective she brings to our team."

Bolden-Morris is no stranger to the game as she grew up around football and her brother Mike Morris is a senior defensive end with the Wolverines. Additionally, her father Mike was an assistant coach at Cardinal Newman High School.

"Football was always my first love, I played it as a kid and I've watched my Dad coach my brother throughout high school," said Bolden-Morris. "I've been on the sidelines with my Dad since I was in 12th grade so when I wasn't playing, I was there. I've spent so much time watching the game and this is something that I've always wanted to do. Obviously, I'm not a man so it would be very difficult for me to excel playing the game, but I wanted to be a part of it in any way I could. For this to be an opportunity is full circle."

Bolden-Morris completed a year and a half playing career on the Hilltop as a member of the women's basketball team. After graduating from Boston College in December of 2020, the shooting guard joined the Blue & Gray midseason last year and made an immediate impact. This past season, she started all 29 games for the Hoyas and led the team in scoring with 12.6 ppg as well as moving into third on Georgetown's all-time list with 83 3-pointers for the season which also led the BIG EAST Conference.

In her career, Bolden-Morris scored 1,145 points and was a three-time BIG EAST Honor Roll selection. Her 107 3-pointers on the Hilltop rank her 13th all-time.  She earned All-ACC Freshman honors after setting a Boston College freshman record for season 3-pointers with 80.

Off of the court, she was a BIG EAST All-Academic selection, a member of the All-ACC Honor Roll and won the 2018-19 Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement.

A native of Belle Glade, Florida, and Cardinal Newman High School, Bolden-Morris will graduate from Georgetown with her master's degree from the School of Continuing Studies in sports industry management. She will add another master's to her resume while working at Michigan.

As she transitions from basketball to football, Bolden-Morris has already been working with the Hoya football team and sitting in on meetings to get a feel for the coaching side of things. Being the lone female in the room is a new experience, but one that she will continue to reflect on as the year progresses.

"I know I am doing something that has never been done before, but it's just really surreal right now, I'm still in awe," said Bolden-Morris. "This is a great opportunity for me, but it's also a chance for me to give others a chance. So many women have reached out to tell me about their coaching careers or high school managers looking for an opportunity in football. I'm so fortunate for the support and love, but also for the chance to inspire others. I'm so blessed to have this opportunity and thankful that Coach Harbaugh has allowed me to. He has already done so much for inclusion so to add to it and learn from him and his legacy is just insane."
