Hoyas Hang On to Upset No. 17 Navy 13-12

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team held on to pick up a big 13-12 victory at No. 17 Navy in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday evening at Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. Georgetown had the lead going into the final quarter and stood strong against a Mids' comeback to improve to 5-4 on the season and move Navy to 7-2 on the year.

Head Coach Ricky Fried
  • "I thought we played with the sense of urgency that we needed against a quality opponent in Navy. I was proud that we hung on at the end and I think we can learn from this win. We didn't play a perfect game so we can build on these lessons and continue to improve."
How it Happened
  • Senior Annabelle Albert started the scoring getting the goal within the first two minutes of action. However, the Mids answered right back with two quick scores to take the lead.
  • Graduate student Mary Pagano would close out the first period finding the back of the cage with just four ticks on the clock to tie the contest at two.
  • Navy opened the second quarter with a goal, but senior Ali Diamond had a retort on the other end.
  • The Mids would find one more before a tally from graduate student Erin Bakes sparked a 5-0 Georgetown run which was bolstered by a pair of goals from Bakes as well as Albert.
  • This would put the Hoyas on top 8-4 and even two late Navy scores were not enough as GU went into the half leading 8-6.
  • Freshman Emma Gebhardt took the pass from Diamond just a minute into the second half as the Hoyas started with the momentum.
  • Navy countered, but sophomore Kylie Hazen sparked a 3-0 run to end the period as senior Celia Walsh contributed and Diamond managed her second of the game on a free position shot to make it 12-7.
  • The run continued in the fourth period on a Gebhardt goal taking the assist from Hazen.
  • Navy would not go away quietly, however, putting together a 5-0 run over the final 10 minutes of the game.
  • The Hoya defense stood strong and Georgetown held on to pick up the 13-12 victory.
Of Note
  • Albert and Gebardt led the way both with hat tricks on the day.
  • Bakes and Diamond managed two goals and an assist apiece.
  • In total, seven Hoyas scored a point in the victory.
  • LizaBanks Campagna led GU at the circle with five draw controls, while sophomore Emma Driggs added three.
  • Emily Gaven took the win in goal with 12 saves for the Hoyas.
  • Georgetown was outshot by the Mids 37-31, and had 13 draw controls to Navy's 16.
  • This is GU's first win over a ranked opponent since the 2019 season when the Blue & Gray defeated then-No. 20 Penn in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
