Baseball Clobbers Nine Homers in 17-11 Win Over Coppin State

ROCKVILLE, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team exploded for a program-record nine home runs for the fourth-most in an NCAA game this season as the Hoyas knocked off Coppin State 17-11 at Shirley Povich Field on Wednesday. GU jumped to 16-9 on the year while the Eagles fell to 9-15.

"Our guys showed a lot of fight tonight. Coppin State came in here, put seven runs on the board in the second inning and we were able to respond in a positive way. The game changed when Jack Weeks entered, giving us four innings of unbelievable competitive spirit while Connor Udell and Miller Freeman on the backend helped to preserve the lead. Offensively, it was a team effort and a special night to watch with nine home runs." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's game

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Coppin State scored one run in the opening frame, the Hoyas responded with a three-spot in the home half of the first. Hyde and Lopez delivered back-to-back solo jacks to start the inning before Carapellotti laced an RBI single through the right side for a 3-1 lead.
  • The Eagles tacked on seven runs in the top of the second to take an 8-3 lead.
  • Georgetown quickly responded in the home half with six runs on a pair of home runs. After loading the bases, Lopez launched a grand slam to left, slashing the CSU lead to one (8-7). Two batters later, Ficca delivered a two-run shot and reclaimed the Hoya lead (9-8).
  • Weeks came on in the third, working himself in and out of bases-loaded trouble without surrendering a run.
  • Alex Rosen launched a solo shot in the bottom of the third to lift GU to a 10-8 edge.
  • Both teams were held off the board until Stern and Carapellotti rocketed solo shots in the sixth for a 12-8 lead.
  • Coppin State pulled to within one (12-11) in the top of the seventh with a three-run frame.
  • Once again, Georgetown responded in the bottom half of the seventh as Eze pulled back his bunt and slapped a three-run shot to left for a 15-11 advantage. Three batters later, Stern laced a two-run homer to right center for his second of the game, pushing the Hoya lead to six, 17-11.
