Hoyas Take Two of Three with 8-7 Win Over UMass on Sunday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team picked up its second series win of the season, downing UMass, 8-7, and taking two of three games from the Minutemen. The Hoyas moved to 7-4 with the victory while UMass fell to 1-2.

"Huge win for our team. I'm really proud of them and how we responded after Friday night to come back and win this series. We found a way to overcome their late surge and a lot had to do with Andrew DeRoche in the middle of the game, getting us out of trouble in the fifth, and Angelo Tonas in the back end. The guys did a great job sticking to the plan and getting the win." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's win

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Ethan Stern and Andrew Ciufo put forth matching 2-for-4 outings with three RBIs and two runs scored against UMass. Stern registered his first home run with the Hoyas while Ciufo smacked a pair of dingers to take the team lead with four.
  • Andrew Bergeron tallied his first career home run with a two-run shot in the second.
  • Jake Hyde extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his 2-for-4 performance on Sunday.
  • Cam Meyer and Owen Carapellotti each notched a hit and a tally.
  • Kyle Salley picked up his second win of the season while Tonas earned his second save in 2022.
  • DeRoche did not allow a run in his 1.2 innings of work while striking out one batter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas jumped out a 1-0 lead on a Stern RBI double down the left field line. Two pitches later, Ciufo belted a two-run shot to right and lifted GU to a 3-0 edge.
  • Bergeron made it 5-0 with one swing of the bat, going deep for a two-run homer in the second after Carapellotti's leadoff double.
  • The Minutemen scored two in the third and a pair in the fourth to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.
  • DeRoche came in with runners on first and second in the fifth and worked himself into bases-loaded trouble before staving off the UMass threat and keeping the visiting team off the board.
  • The Hoyas extended their lead to four (8-4) with a three-spot in the seventh. After Meyer smacked a leadoff single, Stern belted his first homer of the season to put GU ahead by three. Georgetown went back-to-back for the second time in the game as Ciufo registered his second long ball of the afternoon.
  • UMass rallied in the eighth, scoring three of their own but Tonas came on with two outs in the frame and went on to log four straight outs to end the game (8-7).

UP NEXT
