Baseball Topples William & Mary in Extras

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team battled with William & Mary through 10 frames before knocking off the Tribe, 5-4, and jumping out to a three-game winning streak. The Hoyas moved to 8-4 with the victory while the Tribe fell to 5-4.

"Huge win on the road against a very good ball club. Our team showed a lot of fight tonight and found a way to win. Andrew Ciufo got the big hit late in the game, Matthew Sapienza gave us a great start and Angelo Tonas on the back side was excellent, but the stop that we needed was when Marshall Whitmer came on and got us out of trouble with two outs. We played great defense and I love what we are doing in all three parts of the game." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's win

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jake Hyde extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two tallies.
  • Owen Carapellotti, Andrew Ciufo and Ubaldo Lopez each recorded two hits on the afternoon, combining for three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
  • Ethan Stern homered for the second-straight game before finishing the day 1-for-5 with two RBIs.
  • Matthew Sapienza retired the first seven batters he faced on Tuesday before going five innings and surrendering just one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
  • Angelo Tonas picked up his first win of the season, throwing two scoreless frames and striking out three.
  • Georgetown's pitchers combined to surrender just one walk against the Tribe.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas jumped out a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a Stern RBI groundout after a leadoff double by Hyde.
  • Georgetown put a three-spot on the board in the fourth behind a Stern solo shot and two-run homer from Carapellotti to take a 4-0 edge.
  • The Tribe broke through in the home half of the fourth with one run but Sapienza locked in and struck out the next batter before ending the inning on a groundout.
  • William & Mary cut its deficit to one (4-3) with a two-run seventh before Marshall Whitmer came on to end the Tribe's threat.
  • In the eighth, the host team capitalized on a wild pitch and knotted the game at four.
  • After a blank ninth, the game went to extras and Ciufo delivered a game-winning RBI single in the tenth, bringing Hyde around to score and taking a 5-4 lead.
  • Tonas came out for his second inning of work and retired the side in order for the victory.

OF NOTE
  • The extra-inning win marks the team's first since downing Creighton, 3-2, in 10 frames last year (04/25/2021).
