WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team put together a second half run, but fell 14-12 to the Marquette University Golden Eagles Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee. It marked the final road contest of the regular season as GU moved to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST Conference play. Marquette improved to 8-8 overall and 3-1 in league play. With the outcome, both teams have clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Championship scheduled for May 5 and 7 in Denver, Colorado.
How it Happened
- Marquette had control early as the Golden Eagles scored a pair before senior Ali Diamond took the pass from sophomore Kylie Hazen and buried it.
- MU would add two more to end the first quarter leading 4-1.
- The Golden Eagles added another to open the second, but the Hoyas came roaring back as Diamond scored her second of the afternoon on a man-up opportunity to spark a 5-0 run.
- Graduate student Mary Pagano managed one at 9:43 and classmate Erin Bakes found the back of the net to make it 5-4 and force an MU timeout.
- The Blue & Gray continued the momentum out of the break as Hazen assisted on a goal by freshman Emma Gebhardt, and Lily Tardif scored on the ensuing draw just 50 seconds later giving GU the 6-5 lead.
- Marquette would score one in the final 65 seconds of the half as the squads went into the break tied at six.
- Diamond scored to open the second half on a man-up tally, but MU answered late. Bakes would then bury her second of the game, however, a Golden Eagle goal with 18 seconds remaining tied the game at eight going into the final quarter.
- The team traded goals early before MU put together a 4-0 run.
- Georgetown would not go away quietly scoring three goals in just 70 seconds including two by Diamond and one from Bakes.
- Looking at a one-goal deficit, Marquette would gain possession and put it away late making the final 14-12.
Of Note
- Diamond led the way with a career-high five goals, while Bakes added the hat trick.
- Hazen was active tallying five points on one goal and four assists.
- LizaBanks Campagna led GU at the circle with seven draw controls, while Jordyn Sabourin added three.
- Emily Gaven took the loss in goal with 11 saves for the Hoyas.
- Georgetown was outshot 35-32, and MU pulled in 18 draw controls to the Blue & Gray's 12.
- The defense forced 16 Marquette turnovers.
