Georgetown Upsets No. 14 UConn on Senior Day

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team put together a dominating performance from the opening draw as the Hoyas closed out the regular season with a 22-12 upset over the No. 14 UConn Huskies on Friday evening at Cooper Field. Prior to the contest, the Hoyas celebrated the members of the Class of 2022, and the seniors took that onto the field with some incredible performances. With the win, the Blue & Gray improves to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the BIG EAST Conference as well as securing the third seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP. UConn drops to 13-3 overall and 3-2 in league play and will be the fourth seed in the championship.

On the Record
  • "It started at the draw control and we fought for every possession. Everyone on the draw circle were phenomenal and competed the entire game which gave our team confidence. Our offense executed and I was really proud of the heart that they played with. The team played for the seniors and the seniors played for them. You never know how Senior Day is going to go, but they really responded and I'm just so proud of the effort they put out there today."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown came out fired up as senior Jordyn Sabourin hit back-to-back tallies two minutes apart.
  • Freshman Emma Gebhardt followed that up with a goal of her own on senior Ali Diamond's second assist of the day to make it 3-0 and force a Husky timeout.
  • UConn scored out of the break, but graduate student Mary Pagano scored two on her own weaving through defenders to put the Hoyas on top 5-1.
  • The Huskies answered with a 3-0 run, but a goal from junior Lily Tardif on another assist from Diamond broke the momentum.
  • The teams traded goals in the final minutes as Pagano had a first quarter hat trick and the Hoyas led 7-5 to end the period.
  • UConn scored first in the second, but the Hoyas countered with a 4-0 run fueled by back-to-back goals from Gebhardt, one from sophomore Tatum Geist and a laser free position from graduate student Erin Bakes.
  • In the final seconds of the half, the Hoyas would stall for the last shot and Pagano connected with four seconds remaining to make it 12-8 at the break.
  • The third quarter belonged to the Blue & Gray as GU staged a 5-0 run following a UConn goal. The run included a pair of goals from Bakes and two more assists by Diamond as the Hoyas were buzzing.
  • Two goals from UConn made it 17-11 at the end of the third.
