Georgetown Athletics Celebrates Student-Athletes at GUSY Awards

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics held its annual GUSY Awards on Wednesday evening at Gaston Hall. The in-person event returned to campus for the first time since 2019. In 2020, the ceremony was virtual due to COVID-19. The GUSYs is an annual celebration of Georgetown student-athletes that includes five awards created by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and voted on by GU athletes, coaches and administrators.

Hoya Spirit Award
Joella Chase – Women's Soccer
Sean Devlin – Men's Swimming & Diving

The Hoya Spirit award recognizes two student-athletes, one from a women's program and one from a men's program, who demonstrate enthusiasm, integrity, commitment, and pride in being a Georgetown student-athlete and a member of their team.  Through their behavior, attitude, and example, these individuals have made a remarkable impact on their team and the broader Georgetown community.

Courage Award
Tiy Reed – Football
Graceann Bennett – Women's Basketball

The Courage Award recognizes two student-athletes, one from a women's program and one from a men's program, who have exhibited perseverance and strength in the face of adversity, challenges, and/or setbacks, whether physical, academic, or personal.  These individuals are driven, and through their work ethic and passionate dedication to their sport, have gained the respect and inspired their team.

Team Player Award
Jessica Cusi – Volleyball
Mason Bonnie – Men's Lacrosse

The Team Player Award recognizes two student-athletes, one from a women's program and one from a men's program, who, through words and actions on and off the playing field, are committed to the good of the team over individual considerations or success.  These student-athletes contribute to the best of their ability by selflessly playing whatever role will most help their team.

Lasting Legacy Award
Ahmad Wilson – Football
Claudia Pagnozzi-Schwam – Women's Rowing

The Lasting Legacy Award recognizes two graduating student-athletes, one from a women's program and one from a men's program, who are role models for their team and Georgetown Athletics. These individuals embody excellence, integrity and the 150-year old mission of Georgetown athletics and the overall Georgetown community.

People for Others Award
Women's Rowing

The People for Others Award recognizes one sport program who has exhibited outstanding service to the community by one or more of the following criteria: 1) an exceptional commitment to sustained engagement over time, 2) a dedication to sharing the love of sport through skills-based engagement, 3) an extraordinary team spirit as expressed by a deep collaboration with a community partner.

Support Staff Member of the Year
Travis McCormack – Sports Medicine

The Support Staff Member of the Year Award recognizes one member of the athletic staff that directly impacts the athlete experience demonstrating enthusiasm, compassion and trustworthiness. Through their dedication to our student-athletes, this award recipient is an unsung hero that helps our teams achieve success.
