McCarthy Deals Complete-Game Shutout in 4-0 Victory Over Seton Hall

BOWIE, Md. - Graduate student Nolan McCarthy tossed Georgetown's first complete-game shutout in five years behind a career-high 12 strikeouts, knocking off Seton Hall 4-0 on Friday evening at Prince George's Stadium. GU jumped to 25-17 overall with a 6-7 BIG EAST mark while the Pirates fell to 13-29 overall with a 3-7 conference record.

"Nolan McCarthy put forth the most dominant pitching performance that I've seen since I've been here against a really good program. It was one of those games that pitching and defense dominated and we got the runs we needed. Our infield turned two huge double plays, McCarthy allowed no walks, Jake Hyde with an important two-run home run and Nolan Matsko with two key hits gave us life." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's game.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • McCarthy became the first pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout since Simon Mathews against Villanova in 2017. The Oregon native dominated across his nine innings of work, striking out a career-high 12 batters while surrendering just five hits and no walks. He also registered at least one punchout in eight of his nine frames.
  • The Hoya right hander tallied his fourth 10-plus strikeout performance of the season while earning his fifth win.
  • Hyde surpassed teammate Ubaldo Lopez for the team lead and program's single-season record with his 17th home run of the year. The Hoya right fielder finished the day 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
  • Matsko smacked a pair of hits and logged an RBI on the evening.
  • Tony Barreca, Owen Carapellotti and Cam Meyer scored one run apiece.
  • Andrew Ciufo rounded out the Hoyas with multiple hits, smacking a pair of singles on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a blank opening frame, McCarthy worked himself out of trouble and stranded a runner on third to keep the game scoreless.
  • Following a leadoff walk to Barreca in the third, Hyde turned on an inside pitch and launched a two-run shot to right, lifting the Hoyas to a 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back singles from Carapellotti and Meyer, Matsko smacked a high bouncer over the first baseman's head, bringing Carapellotti around to score (3-0). Hyde drove in his third run of the game after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded (4-0).
  • It was all McCarthy from that point forward, striking out three of the four batters he faced in the fifth before retiring 10-straight batters through the eighth.
  • After allowing a leadoff single in the ninth, the Hoya defense kept Seton Hall off the board with a 5-4-3 double play before closing out the game on a groundout to Stern at second (4-0).

OF NOTE
  • McCarthy became the only pitcher in the BIG EAST to toss two complete games this season and is the first Hoya to throw multiple CG's in a single campaign since Mathews (2017).
  • McCarthy also moved into a three-way tie for sixth all-time with 78 strikeouts in a single season, matching Matt Smith (2015) and Jimmy Saris (2007).
  • The Blue & Gray moved to 15-3 this season when its pitching staff strikes out 10 or more batters in a game.
  • The 2022 squad became just the 12th team in program history to reach the 25-win plateau.
  • Friday's contest between Georgetown and Seton Hall was the first official NCAA Division I baseball game played at Prince George's Stadium.
