Hoyas Advance to BIG EAST Championship With 17-13 Win Over Marquette

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team put together an all-around performance to pick up the 17-13 win over the Marquette Golden Eagles on Thursday afternoon in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver. The third-seeded Hoyas advanced to the championship game and move to 9-8 on the season while the second-seeded Golden Eagles move to 8-10 overall. Georgetown will now face top-seeded Denver on Saturday in the championship.

On the Record
  • "I think we competed and that's the bottom line. Marquette plays very hard, they're very athletic and we knew they weren't going to go away quietly. They made us earn the victory today. We wanted to be pushed, maybe not that hard, but we wanted to be pushed and we responded really well. Obviously there are things we can get better at and that's a good problem to have when you're winning the game."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown came out fired up as graduate student Mary Pagano hit a solo shot less than a minute into the contest.
  • Marquette evened the score on the next possession, but it was senior captain Ali Diamond who connected on a free possession attempt sparking a 4-0 run for the Blue & Gray.
  • Late in the quarter, MU would find the back of the cage but a goal from freshman Emma Gebhardt made it 6-2 at the end of the period.
  • Diamond would open the second with a goal shooting just inside the pipe for the angle, but Marquette answered with a 3-0 run before a Gebhardt free position could stop the momentum.
  • Diamond made it a first-half hat trick at the 3:33 mark, but one more GU goal would be sandwiched in between a pair of Marquette scores as the Hoyas went into the break leading 10-7.
  • The senior captain got it started once again in the second half, but Marquette staged a 3-0 run to pull within one 11-10 and force a Hoya timeout.
  • Sophomore Kylie Hazen would score on a pass from graduate student Erin Bakes and Bakes would add one of her own on the next possession before another Hazen goal to make it 14-10 at the end of three quarters.
  • The combination of Diamond and Hazen started strong, but Marquette answered with a pair of goals to mount a comeback.
  • Georgetown would match and the Golden Eagles would not find the answer as the Hoyas held on for the 17-13 victory.
Of Note
  • Diamond led the way tying her career high with five goals and one assist.
  • Hazen had three goals and two assists, while Sabourin managed three goals, one assist and six draw controls.
  • LizaBanks Campagna was impressive on the circle with eight draw controls, and Bakes added two caused turnovers to her goal and duo of assists.
  • Emily Gaven took the win in goal with eight saves for the Hoyas.
  • Georgetown outshot Marquette 33-29, and pulled in 21 draw controls to the Golden Eagles' 13.
  • This will be Georgetown's eighth trip to the championship in program history. The Hoyas won the BIG EAST title in 2010 and 2019.
