Lopez’s Smacks Program-Record Four Homers in 17-1 Victory Over The Shore

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Graduate student Ubaldo Lopez breaks the Georgetown University baseball team's 28-year old record with four of the team's nine home runs, lifting the Hoyas to a 17-1 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday afternoon. GU moved to 19-10 overall while the Hawks dropped to 7-20.

"It started with Collin Garner giving us an unbelievable start, pitching five innings. Today was about Ubaldo Lopez. In baseball, you watch games like this and know how special it is to hit four home runs and have five hits in a game as a fan or as a coach. Our offense did a good job of taking advantage of free bases and putting the bat on the ball" - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's win

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Lopez snapped Noah Gordon's previous single-game home run record (3) set in 1994 with homers in the first, second, fourth and sixth. He also tallied five RBIs on the afternoon.
  • The reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week became the seventh Hoya to tally a program-record five hits in a game and the first since Matt Harrigan in 2008. He also recorded five runs in a game, becoming just the fourth player in program history and first since Ryan Craft in 2005.
  • Jake Hyde launched his team-leading 13th homer of the season, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
  • Owen Carapellotti smacked a pair of dingers on Tuesday, posting a 2-for-4 outing with four RBIs.
  • Andrew Bergeron and Michael Eze rounded out the home run hitters on Tuesday.
  • Collin Garner pitched a solid five innings for the Hoyas, allowing no runs on three hits for his first win of the season.
  • Kyle Salley and Miller Freeman each provided a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hyde and Lopez delivered back-to-back solo jacks in the opening frame to give the Hoyas a 2-0 edge.
  • Lopez followed up in the bottom of the second with a two-run missile down the left field line to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Ciufo scored the team's fifth run in the third when the Shore's starter balked.
  • The Hoyas unloaded nine runs in the fourth inning, beginning with an RBI single from Stern (6-0). After a failed pick off attempt brought Lopez in from third (7-0), Carapellotti ripped a three-run shot to right center for a 10-0 advantage. Georgetown continued the onslaught with solo shots from Bergeron and Lopez with an Eze two-run homer sandwiched in between for a 14-0 lead.
  • Carapellotti smacked his second dinger of the day in the fifth, sending a solo homer to right center for a 15-0 advantage.
  • After the Hawks broke the shutout in the sixth, Lopez delivered his fourth roundtripper of the game in the home half, putting the Hoyas ahead 16-1.
  • Nolan Matsko registered his first hit and RBI of the season, doubling down the right field line, bringing Evan Blum around to score for a 17-1 final score.
