WASHINGTON – The No. 19 Georgetown women's soccer team took down UMass Lowell 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Hoyas' home opener at Shaw Field. The Blue & Gray are now 1-1-0 in nonconference play and the River Hawks fall to 1-1.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Coming off a gritty performance on Thursday night against a very good Penn State team, I expected us to come out hungrier, with more energy and with a determination to put on a great display on our home field for our first home game of the year. I don't think we quite achieved that and we were a bit sloppy. We capitalized on the mistakes they made for all three of our goals. I wasn't 100% happy with the decision making of our attacking players, especially in the first half. In midfield, we can do a better job of rotating when defending and popping out when we're attacking. At the back, we made some mistakes and gave them three of the best chances of the game. I give them credit, they're a great soccer playing team. They came here with a plan and tried to play us straight up. I came away from the game wishing I had more answers from our players because we have a tougher slate of games ahead, starting on Thursday against Virginia and NC State next Sunday on the road. I know we can play better and we need to if we are going to have a good season."
About the Win
- Georgetown found the net 21 minutes into the first half when freshman Henley Tippins took advantage of a poorly laid back pass to the UMass Lowell goalkeeper, striking it in the goal to make it 1-0 for the Hoyas.
- In the 30th minute, Tatum Lenain found herself taking an inside-swinging, right-footed corner from the left side of the field. Lenain's strike was too much for the UMass keeper and the ball dipped into the net to double the Blue & Gray's lead.
- GU's third goal came in the 17th minute of the second half when Tippins found herself on a breakaway down the middle of the field. With two defenders on her, she was able to get the shot off and earn herself a brace on the afternoon (3-0).
- Freshman goalkeeper Cara Martin was tested throughout the 90 minutes making two big saves for Georgetown.
- The Hoyas had 28 shots to the River Hawks three as well as GU earning 11 corner kicks to UML's zero.
