Hoyas Fall to Cavaliers at Shaw Field

Box Score

WASHINGTON – No. 11/10 Georgetown lost 1-0 to No. 8/1 Virginia on Thursday afternoon. The Hoyas are now 1-1-1 in nonconference play and the Cavaliers rise to 3-0.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"I'm very proud of the effort from the girls today. We played a very good team who College Cup and National Championship aspirations. I thought we played them toe-to-toe. It is not a team where you can open yourself up too much because they'll punish you. Our job was to be compact in the first half to try and eliminate certain tendencies they have which I thought we did a good job of. Like all good teams, when we stopped them doing one thing they started to emerge in other areas. We changed our formation in the second half to try and tighten up more in the middle after they started to dominate the middle once we had taken the flanks away. The only disappointing thing was the goal. We had enough chances to clear the ball and tried to pick the pass. I give the kid credit, she got across our defenders and finished it really well. After that we made multiple changes and had a number of three versus threes running at them. Natalie Means did a great job for us turning the corner, but we couldn't get the delivery we wanted.

I am not disappointed with the performance, but a little disappointed with the result. I felt we did enough to at least get a draw out of this game. They punished us and took their chance. We were huffin' and puffin', but never able to land the big punch. I am proud of the kids' effort and these are the games that will get us better as we move through the season."

About the Match

  • Georgetown had a fast start with nearly going up 1-0 over UVA in the first few minutes of the match off a through ball to senior Gia Vicari, but the goal was called back for offsides.
  • The two sides battled it out for the remainder of the half with both sides tallying only three shots each.
  • Early in the second half, Virginia's Haley Hopkins received a cross from Maggie Cagle and flicked the ball in with the outside of her foot to the back post, past the GU goalkeeper, to go up 1-0.
  • The Hoyas and Cavaliers had a high paced final 30 minutes of the half with Georgetown finding gaps through the Virginia backline, but were unable to capitalize for the equalizer and UVA took the win.
