Sailing Opens the 2022-23 Season With Strong Performances

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University coed and women's sailing teams both got off to strong starts in their opening weekend of competition for the 2022-23 season.

On the Record - Head Coach Mike Callahan
  • "We were happy with how we ended up on this first weekend of competition.  It's still very early in the year, but we feel we have extremely talented women's and coed squads that have a chance of winning a lot of events."
Navy Women's Regatta (1st of 7)
  • The women's team headed to Navy to compete against some of the best local competition in a combined division event.  Saturday saw very light wind with lots of chop which led to only two races being completed.  Sunday brought higher winds and waves and made for challenging races.
  • In the A Division, sophomore Piper Holthus and junior Addi Harris finished second, while in B Division seniors Eva Fortunato and Grace Flanagan finished in first.
  • The Hoyas won the regatta by three points over St. Mary's College and 10 points over Navy.
Riley Cup (1st, 5th of 16)
  • The Hoya coed team headed to Old Dominion to compete at the Riley Cup over the weekend. The Riley Cup is traditionally the first double handed regatta of the season and features a mix of veteran and new sailors.
  • The Hoyas fielded two teams at the event, and it was the younger squad of three sophomores and one freshman that came out victorious with an 11-point win over Navy.  The squad was led by freshman Enzo Menditto and sophomore Spencer Kriegstein who won the B Division with a commanding performance.
  • In A, sophomores Danny Hughes and Morgan Rice finished in fourth but only nine points out of first.
  • The other Georgetown team was leading for some of the event, but stumbled a bit at the end finishing fifth overall.
  • In A, seniors Jack Corbett and Elizabeth Fortunato finished in third, while sophomores Jeffrey Petersen and Marguerite Montagner ended up in ninth.
Laser South (5th, 6th, 8th of 20)
  • The Hoyas' singlehanded sailors had their first qualifier of the year at Navy this past weekend at the Laser South.  The top nine sailors moved on to the conference championship and a chance to advance to the national championship.
  • All three Hoyas ended up in the top nine and will compete at the conference championship October 8-9.
  • Sophomore Mateo Di Blasi led the way finishing in fifth, while sophomore Diego Escobar was right behind in sixth and freshman Benjamin Smith ended up in eighth.
Up Next
  • Next weekend the Hoyas return to Navy for the Women's Singlehanded Championship and a Doublehanded event.
