No. 17/11 Georgetown Downs West Virginia

WASHINGTON – The No. 17/11 Hoyas beat the West Virginia Mountaineers 2-0 on Saturday afternoon on Shaw Field. Georgetown rises to 4-1-3 in nonconference play, and the Mountaineers fall to 3-3-3.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"This was a big game for us today, and it was the last game of our nonconference schedule. We really challenged ourselves, and today was no exception to that. West Virginia is a team we have developed a great rivalry with over the last eight to ten years. It is always a tough game with two good teams going at it. I felt today we were a little bit better, and for the most part, we handled their attacks and athleticism well. In moments we were able to connect the passes needed in order to create goals. Obviously, the first goal was huge from Tatum, and then the early goal in the second half really helped us. I'm proud of the girls' efforts because this was a game we needed to win. That's three games in a row that we've won, and we are starting to get some goals again, so I couldn't be any happier."

About The Match
  • The Hoyas and the Mountaineers traded possession through the start of the match, with both sides creating some opportunities in the attacking third.
  • Georgetown played a ball deep into the right corner, and Maja Lardner found Tatum Lenain streaking towards goal at the top of the box. Lenain hit a one-timer from outside the box with her left foot that found the upper left corner, and the Hoyas found themselves ahead 1-0 with 15 minutes left in the half.
  • Just minutes into the second half, the Blue & Gray stuck once again. Cyanne Doyle played a ball into Gia Vicari, who then beat her defender and perfectly placed her shot back post to put the Hoyas up 2-0.
  • Cara Martin was outstanding between the pipes making three saves and capturing her third shutout of the season.
  • The Blue & Gray posted 12 shots, six of them were on target.
