No. 23/10 Georgetown Tops St. John’s in Conference Opener

WASHINGTON – The No. 23/10 Georgetown women's soccer team beat St. John's 1-0 in the BIG EAST opener on Thursday night in Boyds, Maryland at the SoccerPlex. The Hoyas rise to 5-1-3 and the Red Storm move to 3-3-3 on the season.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Conference games always have more edge and Ian is a very good coach. His team were up for the fight, fighting like lions and they made it difficult for us. We had a lot of almost-opportunities and out of nowhere a kid would come in and make a great block. We kept trying to do things the right way, the way we like to do them, in the hope we would eventually get one to change the game. It was a tremendous finish from Emma and it was going to take a special kind of goal to open up the game. We had a couple of chances to get a second and put the game away. St. John's kept fighting, but I thought we handled them well and limited them to only two half chances. It was a great first conference win and now on to Sunday for a different kind of challenge against Creighton."

About the Match
  • Georgetown and St. John's shared possession through the first half with both teams having difficulty breaking each other down tactically.
  • The Hoyas registered seven shots in the first half of the match with a few chances testing the Red Storm's Gina Muzi in the net.
  • GU and SJU entered halftime scoreless but Georgetown came back in the second half with more intensity than they'd shown in the first to dominate possession.
  • The Hoyas finally capitalized on an opportunity in the 71st minute when a string of passes from freshman Natalie Means and junior Erin Martin connected with graduate student Emma Davis. Davis beat a St. John's defender on the dribble, striking the ball from outside the box to chip Muzi, making it 1-0 for Georgetown.
  • The two sides continued to battle to the final whistle, but SJU was unable to equalize and the Blue & Gray clinched the win.

What Lies Ahead
  • Georgetown resumes BIG EAST play when it hosts Creighton at home on Sunday, September 25 at 1 p.m on Shaw Field.
