Georgetown Sailing Wins MAISA Conference Championship

WASHINGTON – It was another successful weekend for Georgetown sailing as it secured a MAISA Conference Championship in match racing and finished near the top in two other events.

On the Record - Head Coach Mike Callahan
  • "I'm really happy for the match race team, they put in a lot of time and effort to get this win. Coach Janel Zarkowsky, who is one of the premier match racers in the world, really got the team to gel at the right time. Jeffrey (Petersen) and Scott (Mais) are the reigning under-21 World Champions, so we knew we had a great team. I'm excited to see how they do at the National Championship."
MAISA Match Race Conference Championship (1st of 8)
  • The match race team headed to the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York to compete in the MAISA Conference Championship with a berth to the National Championship on the line.

  • In the opening round robin, the Hoyas went 6-1 with a late loss to the home team.
  • In the semifinals the Hoyas drew the No. 3 seed Hobart and William Smith Colleges as their opponent.  Two quick victories in the best-of-three series put the Hoyas in the finals versus Kings Point.
  • The Blue & Gray trailed in the first race, but came back on the final leg to squeeze out a win and go up 1-0.  In the second race, the Hoyas led comfortably throughout and took the win and the championship.  With the victory, Georgetown has qualified for the Match Race National Championship in San Diego on November 11-13.
Oyster Bowl (2nd, 3rd of 9, 2nd, 5th of 8)
  • Elsewhere, the Hoyas sent multiple squads to the Oyster Bowl and Oyster Bowl women's regattas at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
