Georgetown Opens BIG EAST Play at Butler on Tuesday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team remains on the road for the second of its three-game Midwest swing, opening BIG EAST Conference play at Butler on Tuesday night. Tipoff at Hinkle Fieldhouse is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast live on FS1. The Hoyas enter league play with a 7-4 nonconference record following an overtime 72-68 win over Notre Dame in South Bend on Saturday. Butler is 9-2 on the year following a 96-70 win over Saginaw Valley on Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas enter the game at 7-4 following a 72-68 overtime win over Notre Dame at Purcell Pavilion on Saturday. Freshmen Drew Fielder and Rowan Brumbaugh combined for 31 points in the win with Fielder chipping in a career-high 16 points off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting, including a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc while Brumbaugh tallied 15 points. Ismael Massoud chipped in 13 points while Dontrez Styles and Jay Heath each added 10 apiece to round out the quintet of Hoyas in double figures. Supreme Cook led the Hoyas on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds while Heath paced the offense with five assists.
  • For his efforts in a 2-0 week, Brumbaugh was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday. The D.C. native averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He made 8-of-16 from the field and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the foul line.
  • A quartet of Hoyas are averaging double figures with Jayden Epps, who has missed the last two games because of illness, leading the way with 18.9 ppg. He is followed by Styles (15.2 ppg), Massoud (10.8) and Cook (10.7). Epps leads the BIG EAST Conference in scoring.
  • Cook is GU's leader on the glass, grabbing 8.6 rpg, ranking second in the BIG EAST.
  • Brumbaugh (18) and Wayne Bristol Jr. (13) combine for 44.9% of the team's steals with Brumbaugh's 1.8 spg ranking fifth in the league.
  • Epps paces the offense with 4.7 apg.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
  • Butler enters the game at 9-2 and on a BIG EAST-best six-game win streak, most recently defeating Saginaw Valley 96-70 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Freshman Finley Bizjack led five Bulldogs in double figures with a career-high 17 points while Pierre Brooks II chipped in 15, followed by DJ Davis (12), Jahmyl Telfort (11) and Landon Moore (10). Jalen Thomas led BU on the glass, grabbing eight boards.
  • Brooks leads a quarter of Bulldogs in double figures averaging 16.8 ppg, followed by Telfort (15.6), Davis (12.0) and Posh Alexander (10.9).
  • Thomas is Butler's rebounding leader, pulling down 6.6 rpg while Alexander dishes out 5.3 apg to pace the offense.
  • The Bulldogs are led by Head Coach Thad Matta, in his second season of his second stint at Butler. The BU grad returned to his alma mater at the beginning of the 2022-23 season after previously serving as the head coach during the 2000-01 season. 
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH BUTLER
  • Tuesday's matchup will be the 23rd all-time between the two programs, dating back to a 2009 nonconference matchup between the squads. The series is knotted at 11-11.
  • Georgetown and Butler split the pair of games last year, each stealing a win on the road. At Hinkle last season, Georgetown won 68-62 behind a trio in double figures, including Heath's 12 points and seven rebounds.
