Georgetown Faces No. 6/6 Marquette on the Road

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team wraps up its three-game road trip at No. 6/6 Marquette on Friday, December 22. Tipoff at Fiserv Forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FS1. Following a 74-64 setback in the BIG EAST opener at Butler, the Hoyas are 7-5 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play. Marquette is coming off a 72-57 loss at Providence to open league action and sit at 9-3 on the season with a 0-1 mark in BE play.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas enter the game at 7-5 after falling 74-64 at Butler on Tuesday night. Dontrez Styles led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including a 3-for-5 effort from beyond the arc. Jayden Epps, making his first appearance since missing a pair of games because of illness, chipped in 12 points off the bench while Supreme Cook totaled 10 points and grabbed a squad-best seven rebounds. Rowan Brumbaugh and Ismael Massoud paced the offense with three assists apiece.
  • On Monday, Brumbaugh was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week following a 2-0 week for the Hoyas. The D.C. native averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He made 8-of-16 from the field and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the foul line. His basket with 1.2 seconds left in regulation forced overtime in a 72-68 victory at Notre Dame.
  • A quartet of Hoyas are averaging double figures with Epps leading the way with 18.2 ppg. He is followed by Styles (15.5 ppg), Cook (10.7) and Massoud (10.2). Epps ranks second in the BIG EAST Conference in scoring.
  • Cook is GU's leader on the glass, grabbing 8.5 rpg, ranking second in the BIG EAST.
  • Brumbaugh (18) and Wayne Bristol Jr. (15) combine for 43.4% of the team's steals with Brumbaugh's 1.6 spg ranking fifth in the league.
  • Epps paces the offense with 4.2 apg.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE NO. 6/6 GOLDEN EAGLES
  • Marquette enters the game at 9-3, most recently falling at Providence 72-57. Tyler Kolek poured in 21 points to lead a trio of Golden Eagles in double figures followed by Kam Jones (13) and Oso Ighodaro (11). Kolek, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, stuffed the stat sheet grabbing squad bests in rebounds (9) and assists (5).
  • Kolek's 15.5 ppg leads MU, followed by Jones' 15.4 ppg and Ighodaro's 13.5 ppg to round out those in double figures.
  • Ighodaro pulls down a squad-best 6.3 rpg while Kolek dishes out a squad-best 5.8 apg.
  • The Golden Eagles are led by Head Coach Shaka Smart, in his third season at Marquette. Smart guided Marquette to a historic level of success in 2022-23, highlighted by the program's first BIG EAST Conference regular season and tournament titles. As a result of the team's success in 2022-23, Smart claimed national coach of the year honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches, United States Basketball Writers Association and Associated Press.  He also claimed unanimous BIG EAST Coach of the Year accolades. 
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH MARQUETTE
  • Friday's matchup will be the 36th all-time between the two programs, dating back to the 1941-42 season. MU leads the series 21-14 and has won four straight.
  • In last year's matchup at Fiserv Forum, the Hoyas fell 95-73 despite four reaching double figures, including Wayne Bristol Jr. who went 6-for-7 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort from beyond the arc.
