Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 8 Rutgers

Piscataway, N.J. – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team (1-2) fell 15-8 to the No. 8 Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (3-0) on Saturday afternoon at SHI Stadium. Erin Bakes led the Hoyas with four goal in her third straight game. 

On The Record
"I'm disappointed in the way we started the game," said Head Coach Ricky Fried. "I thought Rutgers came out really strong. Rutgers played harder than we did for most of the game. We have a lot of work to do to figure out how we can get better." 

How It Happened
  • After going scoreless in the opening five minutes, the Scarlet Knights went on a three-goal scoring run, two of which came off of a free position shot. The Hoyas found the back of the net at the 2:16 mark from an unassisted play by Tatum Geist. RU capped off the first quarter with a free position goal to lead the Hoyas 4-1.
  • The Scarlet Knights' offensive pressure continued in the second quarter as they landed five goals, including a man up conversion tally by Cassidy Spilis. RU's defense held the Hoyas scoreless and limited their shots to five. 
  • RU landed the first goal of the third quarter at the 13:48 mark. Bakes responded with her first goal of the game but was quickly toppled nine seconds later by a Spilis' fifth goal of the game. The Hoyas and the Scarlet Knights exchanged a pair of goals before Bakes earned a hat trick to spark a four goal run for Georgetown. The Hoyas cut RU's lead to 12-7 by the end of the third. 
  • In the fourth quarter, RU widened their lead to 15 by way of three-straight goals. Geist added a tally at the 1:35 mark for a final score of 15-8. 
Of Note
  • Bakes led the Hoyas with four goals followed by Geist with two and Emma Gebhardt and Kylie Hazen recorded one apiece. 
  • Lily Athanas led the Blue & Gray at the circle with five draw controls, while sophomore Maley Starr tallied four. 
  • GU led in draw controls 15-12.
