Women’s Lacrosse Battles Back to Defeat Monmouth

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team (4-4) picked up its first win on Cooper Field after battling back against Monmouth (5-4) in an 18-16 victory. Emma Gebhardt led the Hoyas with a program-best 10 goals in a single game which ranks fourth in NCAA records.

On The Record
"It was a sloppy game," said Head Coach Ricky Fried. "I thought things were a little hectic at times but I thought our team showed a lot of character in the second half by fighting back. The first five minutes of the second half really set the tone for the rest of the game."

How It Happened
  • The Hawks started the scoring off at the 13:55 mark but Gebhardt and Erin Bakes would respond with two back-to-back goals to earn the lead for the Hoyas. Monmouth's Cassidy Orban added a goal less than a minute later but the Hoyas would go on a three-goal run led by Gebhardt with two. Mya Brock landed a third goal for the Hawks at the 6:09 mark to narrow the Hoyas' lead to 5-3. Georgetown and Monmouth exchanged a pair of free-position goals followed by two additional free-position goals by the Hoyas. With less than a minute remaining in the first, the Hawks found the back of the net to come within three of the Hoyas 8-5.
  • Monmouth's offense dominated the second quarter scoring eight goals including four from Brock. With 57 seconds left in the quarter, Lily Tardif scored a shorthanded goal off of a pass from Rileigh Meyer but the Hoyas would finish the half down 13-9.
  • The Hoyas put on the pressure in the third quarter scoring five goals in the span of three minutes and 16 seconds. The Hawks would land a free position shot but Gebhardt would score three consecutive goals to put the Hoyas up 18-14 and the end of the third.
  • The Hawks landed a women-up goal at the 12:48 mark of the fourth quarter. The Hoyas would hold off the Hawk for six minutes before Caroline Brennan found the back of the net to set the final score 18-16. Georgetown shut down Monmouth for the remainder of the quarter to pull away with their first win on Cooper Field.
Of Note
  • Gebhardt doubled her goals this season after scoring a program record of 10 goals in a single game. The sophomore is now tied for fourth in the NCAA in single-game goal records. Bakes, Tardif and Katie Goldsmith each contributed two goals while Kylie Hazen and Tessa Brooks both added one.
  • At the draw, Maley Starr tallied a squad best eight draw controls followed by Lily Athanas and Emma Driggs with four each.
  • In net, Leah Warehime earned her first win of the season with six saves.
