Ninth-Seeded Hoyas to Face Eighth-Seeded Bulldogs in BIG EAST Tournament Opener

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University women's basketball is preparing for the BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP Brands this weekend.  Ninth-seeded Georgetown will face eighth-seeded Butler on Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the opening round of the tournament held at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown (13-16, 6-14 BIG EAST) closed out the regular season with a 61-53 loss at St. John's on Friday evening.
  • Senior captain Graceann Bennett led the way with 17 points and five rebounds, while graduate student Kristina Moore and junior Jada Claude each added 14 points, respectively. Claude also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in the contest.
  • The Hoyas shot 37.3% (19-51) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 42.3% (22-52) shooting by the Red Storm.
  • GU outrebounded St. John's 35-30 in the game, and Georgetown forced eight Red Storm turnovers on two steals.
  • Earlier today, the league announced its postseason awards and the Hoyas were honored with three. Guard Kennedy Fauntleroy was named the unanimous BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and unanimously earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team, while Bennett won the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. Additionally, junior captain Kelsey Ransom was named Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST.
  • Fauntleroy is the BIG EAST's top-scoring freshman at 11.3 points per game, and also ranks third among all BIG EAST players this season with her 2.5 steals per game average.
  • Ransom is the Hoyas leading scorer and is 15th in the league in scoring with 12.8 ppg. She is second in the league in steals with 2.7 spg which ranks her 24th in the nation, is 11th in the league on the glass with 6.6 rpg, and 10th in the conference in assists managing 3.3 apg.
  • Georgetown's record tied the Hoyas for eighth in the league, but Butler held the head-to-head advantage placing the Hoyas ninth in the seedings.
About the Bulldogs
  • Butler is coming into the matchup with a record of 11-18 and a matching 6-14 in league play.
  • The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a 74-46 loss at Creighton which snapped a four-game win streak with victories over Providence, Xavier, Seton Hall and the Hoyas.
  •  Rachel McLimore is the lone Bulldog averaging in double figures as she leads the squad with 11.3 ppg.
  • Butler leads the BIG EAST and ranks eighth in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage (38.0) as the Bulldogs average 7.8 made 3-point field goals per game.
Series Information
  • The Hoyas are 9-11 all-time against the Bulldogs but fell to them twice this season.
  • GU dropped a 72-48 decision at home in January and then lost a tough one in Indy in February by a score of 58-56.
  • In the most recent meeting, Ransom led the way with 12 points, while Bennett added 10 and a squad-high five boards.
  • The rookie pair of Fauntleroy and Rivera scored 10 points apiece to round out those in double figures.
