Hoyas Down Dayton 7-4

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team downed the Dayton Flyers 7-4 behind a 17-strikeout day from the Hoya pitching staff. This is the most strikeouts the Hoyas have recorded in a game since April 13, 2019, when they recorded 18 against Villanova. GU moves to 12-9 on the season while Dayton falls to 5-14.

ON THE RECORD
"Today was a great day of baseball and we found a way to get the job done. Cody Jensen gave us an unbelievable start and while we didn't support him defensively at some points, he was fantastic. It was great to get Cody Bowker back and that was a big two innings he had for us. Garret Keough and Jordan Yoder were both fantastic out of the bullpen. 17 strikeouts from our pitching staff is a testament to all of their hard work. Dayton is a really good team with a good offense, but our inning was the fourth where Ubaldo Lopez had the big home run. Luke Bauer, Travis Ilitch and Marco Castillo all had big opportunities and big hits in those moments that helped us get the win today. I am really proud of our guys coming out here on a Friday and getting a win against a really good team. Looking forward to getting back out here tomorrow for game two." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first two innings of the game were scoreless from both sides as the pitchers were in a rhythm early.
  • In the third, Dayton was able to score the first run of the game on an RBI single to left field. GU was unable to generate much offense in the bottom of the third going three up, three down.
  • In the top of the fourth Dayton extended its lead to 2-0 after another RBI single to left field. The bottom half of the fourth was the turning point of the game for the Blue & Gray. After Kretzchmar and Carapellotti got on base, Lopez hit a no-doubt three-run bomb to left field giving GU its first lead of the day at 3-2.
  • After the home run, Ficca would single to first and Castillo was HBP putting two runners on. Bauer stepped up to the plate and spanked a two RBI double to right field bringing home Ficca and Castillo and extended the Hoya lead to 5-2.
  • The Flyers were persistent though and added a run in the top of the fifth to bring the score to 5-3 while GU was unable to add any runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • Dayton would hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to bring the game within one, but an Ilitch single up the middle in the bottom half of the inning would give GU the 6-4 advantage heading into the seventh.
  • In the seventh, Dayton was unable to generate much offense tallying only one hit. In the bottom half of the inning, after a Ficca walk, Castillo would hit an RBI double to center field that brought Ficca home giving GU the 7-4 lead.
  • The standout pitching from GU carried the Hoyas through the last two innings as the Blue & Gray didn't allow any runs or hits in the eighth and ninth innings. GU secured the win on two-consecutive strikeouts for Jordan Yoder in the top of the ninth taking game one of the series 7-4.

OF NOTE
  • Jensen recorded eight strikeouts and picked up his fourth win of the season.
  • Bowker was phenomenal in two innings of work allowing two hits while striking out five.
  • Garret Keough, Kyle Salley and Yoder didn't allow a Dayton hit in the final two innings of the game. Yoder recorded his second save of the season.
