Hoyas Sweep Dayton With 6-4 Win

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team downed the Dayton Flyers for the third-consecutive day to sweep the series. GU was led by Ubaldo Lopez and Jake Hyde who each had a three-run home run. The GU pitching staff was spectacular all weekend recording 49 strikeouts in the three-game series which is a program-record.

ON THE RECORD
"Such a great weekend for our guys and our organization to sweep a really good program in Dayton. I am really proud of how we fought throughout the game and it was a close game that was back and forth. Our pitching staff this whole weekend was just spectacular. We didn't defend like we needed too but we were able to make the plays when we needed them the most. Kyle Salley came in today in a huge spot and struck out the side and that was a huge momentum shift that we needed. Then Jake Hyde and Ubaldo Lopez with those three-run home runs helped lift us to victory today. I am really proud of our group and the organization and how we responded after a tough game Wednesday night. To come out and win three in a row was a lot of fun and we are looking forward to getting back to it on Tuesday against Maryland. " - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first two innings were scoreless for both sides as both pitchers were dealing early. In the third inning, Dayton left one runner stranded after earning a lead-off walk.
  • In the bottom of the third, Michael Eze earned a walk and so did Owen Carapellotti putting two on base for GU. Lopez stepped up to the plate and for the third-consecutive day, Lopez sent a no-doubt shot to left giving GU the 3-0 advantage early.
  • The Hoyas struggled in the top of the fourth allowing three runs on two hits while committing two errors. The score was even heading into the fifth inning.
  • The fifth frame was scoreless from both sides. In the top of the sixth, Dayton added a run to take its first lead of the day at 4-3. GU went three up, three down in the bottom half of the sixth.
  • GU held off the Flyers in the top of the seventh trailing by one heading into the bottom of the inning. Carapellotti was hit by a pitch with two outs and then Lopez hit a single to left field moving Carapellotti to second. Hyde stepped up and hit a three-run bomb to right field that went over the outfield netting and into the school yard across the street. GU took the 6-4 advantage into the eighth inning.
  • Keough was stellar in the eighth, recording two of his three strikeouts when the Hoyas needed it the most. The GU offense was unable to do more damage in the bottom of the eighth taking the two-run lead into the ninth.
  • Mead came in to start the ninth and retired the Flyers in order to secure GU's 14th win of the 2023 campaign.
