Hoyas Fall in a One-Point Contest at No. 24 Penn

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team (5-6) fell on the road in a tight back-and-forth battle to No. 24 Penn 11-10 on Sunday afternoon. 

On The Record
"We played a hard-fought game for the entire contest," said Head Coach Ricky Fried. "However, our 17 turnovers are too many against a quality Penn team."

How It Happened
  • After a scoreless opening five minutes, Erin Bakes netted the first goal of the contest at the 9:43 mark. Penn responded a minute later with a goal from Niki Miles to keep the score tied 1-1. The Hoyas jumped out to a two-goal lead to end the first  after Kylie Hazen and Tessa Brooks netted back-to-back goals.
  • Penn landed the first goal of the second at the 13:30 mark. Gracie Driggs respond a minute later to put the Hoyas up 4-2. The Quakers went on a two-goal run to tie the game 4-4. GU and Penn traded two pairs of goals to keep the match tied at 6-6 but the Quakers would find the back of the net to end the first half up 7-6. 
  • Penn opened up the third quarter with back-to-back goals. The Hoyas responded with two of their own to come within one of Penn (9-8). 
  • GU and Penn went scoreless for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. The Quakers and the Hoyas traded two sets of goals to close out the contest 11-10 in favor of Penn. 
Of Note
  • The Blue & Gray led in saves with 17 compared to Penn's nine. Emily Gaven tallied eight saves in the first half while Leah Warehime added nine in the second half. 
  • Hazen led the Hoyas with three goals followed by Driggs with a season high of two. Additionally five Hoyas each contributed one goal. 
  • Nicole Massimino led the defense with two caused turnovers. 
  • Maley Starr recorded a team-best three draw controls while Kendall Steer and Emma Driggs added two each. 
Up Next
The Hoyas will return to the Hilltop next weekend in their first conference matchup of the season against Marquette. The Hoyas and Golden Eagles will square off on April 1 at 3 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
