Hoyas Fall to Marquette in BIG EAST Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team (5-7, BE 0-1) fell in its first conference matchup against Marquette (10-1, BE 1-0) 14-12 at home on Saturday afternoon.

On The Record
"I give Marquette a lot of credit," said Ricky Fried. " They played with a lot more energy than we did outside of the first quarter. Until the rain delay we weren't able to come back and sustain anything for a long period of time. Marquette deserves all the credit for the way they played today."

How It Happened
  • The Hoyas got off to a hot start in the first quarter. Emma Gebhardt netted the first goal of the game off a pass from Kylie Hazen at the 13:25 mark. Three minutes later the Golden Eagles landed a free position goal to tie the game 1-1. GU's offense took control of the remainder of the quarter going on a five-goal scoring run led by Hazen with two. Cate Parsells earned her first goal of the season.
  • Marquette responded to Georgetown's run with a five-goal run of their own in the second quarter to tie the contest 6-6. Hazen scored her third goal of the game at the 0:51 mark to give the Hoyas the 7-6 lead heading into halftime.
  • The Golden Eagles produced another five-goal scoring run in the third quarter but was ended by Hazen with a goal at the 3:26 mark. Marquette held the lead 11-8 at the end of the third quarter.
  • The Hoyas started the fourth quarter with a goal from Tessa Brooks at the 13:07 mark. Marquette and Georgetown would trade three sets of goals and close out the contest with the Golden Eagles leading 14-12.
Of Note
  • Georgetown led Marquette in shots (32-28) and ground balls (15-12).
  • Hazen led the Hoyas with four goals followed by Gebhardt with three and Tessa Brooks with two.
