Hoyas Defeat Navy 7-1

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team picked up its second win of the week on Wednesday as the Hoyas defeated the Navy Midshipmen 7-1. GU moves to 8-5 while the Midshipmen slide to 4-8.

ON THE RECORD
"What a game for our home opener against a really good team. I am really proud of Kai Leckszas, for his first-career start to give us four, almost five innings, was really awesome. He was on a pitch count, so we were a little limited with that, but he set the tone. Garret Keough came on in a really big spot and got us out of a jam. Our bullpen of Carson Frye, Andrew Williams and Jordan Yoder was phenomenal. Our team had to stay the course with tough conditions today, but it was one that our offense stayed the course, and it paid off. We had another great day by Zaid Walker and Michael Eze. Christian Ficca also played really well today and had some good at bats during that sixth and seventh inning. Overall, we didn't change our approach and we just have to keep playing good baseball and play better defensively. Really proud of our guys and ready for the weekend series." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Zaid Walker went 3-for-4 at the plate for his second-consecutive game with three or more hits
  • Michael Eze went 1-for-5 with a home run, his second in the past two days
  • Christian Ficca went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and RBI
  • Garret Keough earned the win on the mound moving him to 2-0 on the season

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first frame, Navy was able to put the first run of the day on the board in the second inning making the score 1-0.
  • GU was unable to get much offense going through the early innings recording no runs and just three hits. The Hoyas left four runners stranded between the second and fifth innings.
  • GU was able to contain the Midshipmen offense throwing seven-consecutive shutout innings after allowing one run in the second.
  • In the sixth, GU was able to generate momentum after a Ubaldo Lopez double. Ficca would reach base on an error and Lopez would come home to even the score at 1-1.
  • GU wasn't done yet, Owen Carapellotti stepped up to the plate and ripped a single up the middle moving Ficca to second. On the ensuing at bat, Austin Kretzschmar would single up the middle bringing Ficca home, giving GU its first lead of the day.
  • GU continued their dominance on the mound in the seventh retiring the Navy side in order. In the bottom half of the seventh, Eze hit a two-run shot to left field to start the scoring for GU. This was Eze's second home run in the past two days as he hit a grand slam yesterday against George Mason.
  • The bottom half of the inning saw GU score three more runs, making the score 7-1.
  • Navy was unable to generate much offense the rest of the way as both Andrew Williams and Jordan Yoder got the six outs, they needed to end the game and capture the Hoyas eighth win of the season.

  • Keough picked up his second win of the season today.
