Hoyas Defeats Xavier in BIG EAST Contest

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team improves to 1-1 in BIG EAST play and 6-7 overall after a dominating 25-8 victory over Xavier on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue & Gray were led by Erin Bakes with seven goals while 11 Hoyas added at least one goal apiece.

"It took us a while to get started," said Head Coach Ricky Fried. "However, I was pleased with our response after the weather delay."

How It Happened
  • Xavier got the scoring started in the opening 30 seconds of the game with a goal from Erin Berls. Kylie Hazen responded a minute later to tie the contest 1-1. In the following minute, the Hoyas and the Musketeers would trade a pair of goals but Xavier would regain the lead after a fast-break goal from Riley Halloran. Following a GU timeout, the Hoyas went on a five-goal scoring run bookended by Bakes. Xavier ended the run with a goal at the 5:10 mark. Ten seconds later straight off the draw, Bakes found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the game. Xavier would respond with a goal from Lola Mancuso before the game would be paused due to weather. After a two-hour delay, GU and XU would return to score one goal each in the remaining two minutes of the first quarter. The Hoyas held the lead 9-6.
  • The Hoyas got off to a strong start in the second quarter with another five-goal scoring run led by Bakes with two. Xavier responded with two goals in under a minute. The Hoyas would dominate the remainder of the second, scoring four unanswered goals including two from Hazen. At halftime, the Hoyas led 18-8. 
  •  The Hoyas picked up right where they left off, scoring five goals unanswered goals in the third to lead 23-8. The Hoyas held the Musketeers to three shots in the third. 
  • Georgetown would add two goals from Reilly Hogan and Lauren Lisauskas in the fourth quarter to close out the score at 25-8. With two minutes remaining in the contest, the game would be called due to lightning giving GU its first conference win of the season. 
Of Note
  • GU's 25 goals are the second-most scored by a BIG EAST team this season.
  • The Hoyas outshot the Musketeers 44-19 and led in draw controls (21-13) and caused turnovers (11-6). 
  • Bakes recorded a personal best of seven goals in a singles game as a Hoya. Hazen contributed five goals while Goldsmith Brooks and Tradif each added two apiece. Maley Starr, Cate Parsells and Olivia Rubin each add one goal. Jacqueline Jaskiewicz, Neely Holt, Lisauskas and Hogan each earned their first goal of the season.
  • Emma Gebhardt was a key playmaker in the GU offense, totaling a team-best five assists. 
  • Melissa Massimino led the defense with three caused turnovers followed by Tatum Geist with two. 
  • At the draw, Gracie Driggs led with seven draw controls followed by Hazen with five and Starr with four. 
Up Next
The Hoyas will have 10 days off before the return to Cooper Field for a conference battle with Villanova on April 15. The Hoyas and the Wildcats are scheduled to face at 1 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
