WASHINGTON – Tasha Butts was officially introduced as the 11th head coach in Georgetown University women's basketball history inside of Nolan Hall at the Thompson Athletics Center on Tuesday afternoon. Butts was joined by Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed as well as fans, students, colleagues, media members and her family.
"I know that I'm at a place where the team believes in me and who I am as a person to lead this program, and that means a lot," said Butts. "I know, staring at these young ladies, everyone wants to win. But it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to win. And for them to trust me to teach you all, to mentor you, is something that I probably will never be able to describe. But I'm going to stand before you all and try my best."
Butts comes to Georgetown from Georgia Tech after a long coaching and professional WNBA career. She joined the Georgia Tech women's basketball staff as an assistant coach in April 2019, and was promoted to associate head coach in April 2021. Butts also coached for eight seasons at LSU, and played at Tennessee under legendary coach Pat Summitt.
Butts' first day on campus was a busy one including interviews, meetings with players and staff and even greeting members of the band, Hoya Blue and cheerleading squad as she introduced herself to the Georgetown community.
"This program needs a strong leader that can teach and be a mentor to our players, building them into champions on the court and in the years that follow," remarked Reed. "Coach Butts has truly embodied Georgetown's tenant of cura personalis in the challenges she has seen both in the game of basketball, and in her personal life. But with each setback, she has fought back and come out stronger than before. It is for this reason that I am certain she can inject this toughness and attitude into our program."
