Coed Fleet Racing Takes Fourth at ICSA National Championships

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown sailing team closed out the 2022-23 season competing in all three national championships over the past two weeks in King's Point, New York. The Hoyas boasted 11th place finishes in both women's fleet racing and coed team racing, but the excitement of the event was GU's impressive fourth-place result in coed fleet racing on the final day of competition.

Women's Fleet Racing
11th of 18
  • The first day of the regatta started off with a stiff northerly breeze. With 10 races anticipated for both the A and B divisions, all sailors arrived to the race course seeing 10 to 15 knots. As forecasted, the breeze did drop throughout the day and sailors were challenged with oscillating conditions.
  • The current remained a factor on the course as well providing another level of difficulty for teams to consider. Sailing wrapped up at 5 p.m. with 10 races being completed for both divisions.
  • On Friday, sailors waited all day for a breeze that never filled.
  • Georgetown finished with 88 points in the A division and 103 in the B division for a total of 191 points overall.
Coed Team Racing
11th of 18
  • Day one of the championship started with north winds from 4 to 6 knots. After logging about 18 races, the wind shut down and sent all teams in for a long wind delay.
  • Sunday began with another long wind delay as folks on shore hoped and waited for the late sea breeze to kick in. At 12:45 p.m., sailors hit Long Island Sound with SSE winds around 5 to 8 knots with a building breeze throughout the day.
  • On Monday after three days of racing on Long Island Sound, sailors saw more challenging conditions with shifting breeze and large swells. Winds started out of the north from 10 to 15 knots.
  • Hoya sailors: Mariner Fagan, Emily Panarella; Jeffrey Petersen, Caro Gaston; Mateo Di Blasi, Marguerite Montagner; Diego Escobar, Audrey Fung; Edward Cook, Addi Harris, Scott Mais
Coed Fleet Racing
4th of 18
  • After a slow start on day one, Georgetown put together a huge performance on the final day of competition.
  • In the final race of the regatta, the Hoyas held a significant lead on the competition, but the time limit hit before the race could be completed resulting in it not counting towards the total.
  • The Blue & Gray finished with 50 points in the A division and 79 points in the B division for a total of 129. This sat them only behind Stanford (93), Yale (106) and Harvard (112).
  • GU tied with Dartmouth with 129 points, but took the head-to-head tie breaker.
