Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. 17/20 Hoyas downed St. John's 3-1 to open BIG EAST play on Thursday evening in Queens, New York. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-1-3 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST play while St. John's slides to 5-2-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference action.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Tonight was a very strong performance from the girls. Playing here is always a real challenge and Ian is always able to get everything out of his group. We spoke about starting fast and setting the tone of the game and managed to do that with a fabulous early goal from
Allie Winstanley. I thought we managed the rest of the first half well and we stressed again the importance of starting the second half well, which we did yet again.
Natalie Means scored a scrappy goal to double our lead. At that point, we could rest some people and give some players meaningful minutes. When
Grace Sherman scored a world class third goal, I felt like we could just see out the game but give St. John's credit, they battled hard and scored one late to make it interesting. Anytime you can take three points on the road in the Big East it's a good night and we head on to Creighton now hoping for another positive result Sunday."
