WASHINGTON – Freshman Tinoda Matsatsa has set a new NCAA record for the indoor 1,000-meter run with a 2:18.05 finish.
Matsatsa set the record winning first in the event at the Hokie Invitational this Saturday. Matsatsa passed former record holder Texas runner Yusuf Bizimana who set a new record himself last weekend with a 2:18.10 time.
In his first year at Georgetown, Matsatsa has won all three of his races in three different events. The 1,000m at Virginia Tech, the 600m at Penn State, and the 800m at Boston University.
ON THE RECORD
"That was an incredibly special night for Hoya middle distance running. Setting an NCAA record is beyond difficult, but to do it as a freshman in the first time competing in the event is truly special. Tinoda is one of the best young talents in the world. We had four guys break the school record in the 1000 and a fifth barely miss it. I knew this group was ready to do big things but always cool to see it actually happen. Very excited for the rest of the season." - Men's Track & Field Assistant Coach/Head Cross Country Coach Brandon Bonsey
