Georgetown Men’s Basketball to Host Notre Dame in Saturday Afternoon Contest

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team is set to host former BIG EAST rival Notre Dame in a Saturday afternoon showdown at Capital One Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NBC. The Blue & Gray enter Saturday's contest with a 2-0 record after securing an 85-77 win over Lehigh at McDonough Arena to open the season. After defeating the Mountain Hawks, GU secured a 69-57 victory over Fairfield in its first game of the season at Capital One Arena.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown won its most recent contest last Saturday defeating the Fairfield University Stags, 69-57, at Capital One Arena to improve to 2-0 on the season.
  • Thomas Sorber led the way for the Hoyas, tallying 25 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the floor. The freshman also led the team in rebounds pulling down nine boards and falling one shy of a double-double. Jayden Epps was also in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Micah Peavy paced the offense with five assists followed by Malik Mack and Epps who had four apiece. Peavy tallied a career-best seven steals. Georgetown shot 47.4% (27-for-57) from the floor and held the Stags to a 33.3% (20-for-60) performance from the field. On the glass, Georgetown outrebounded Fairfield 39-32.
  • For his efforts in a 2-0 week for the Blue & Gray, Sorber was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday after averaging a double-double with 22.5 ppg and 11.0 rpg, while also recording 2.0 bpg and 2.0 spg.
  • Sorber's 22.5 ppg ranks fourth in the BIG EAST and leads a quarter of Hoyas in double figures followed by Epps (14.5), Peavy (14.0) and Mack (11.0).
  • Sorber is also leading the league and the team on the glass with 11.0 rpg followed by Drew Fielder and Jordan Burks, each with 6.0 rpg.
  • Mack's 4.5 apg paces the offense and ranks eighth in the BE while Epps and Peavy dish out 3.5 apg.
  • Peavy's 5.0 spg is the best in the BIG EAST Conference while Sorber's 2.0 bpg ranks fifth in the league.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who enters his 19th season as a collegiate head coach and his second with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE FIGHTING IRISH
  • Notre Dame enters Saturday's contest with a 2-0 record, after defeating the University at Buffalo on Monday 86-77. Tae Davis' 27 led a quartet of Irish in double figures followed by Markus Burton (19), Braeden Shrewsbury (19) and Kebba Nije (17). Burton was the leader on the glass, pulling down nine boards. The Fighting Irish shot 50.8% (30-59) from the field.
  • Notre Dame is led by the quartet of Burton (18.5 ppg), Shrewsberry (18.5 ppg), and Davis (18.0 ppg) who have accounted for 62.8% of the Irish scoring. Nije rounds out those in double figures with 10.5 ppg.
  • On the glass, Nije grabs 7.5 rpg to lead the Irish followed by Burton's 6.0 rpg.
  • Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry enters his second season at the helm of Notre Dame. Shrewsberry was previously the head coach of Penn State University from 2021-23, tallying a 37-31 record with the Nittany Lions and leading them to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH NOTRE DAME
  • The Blue & Gray hold a 17-13 all-time record against Notre Dame dating back to 1948. The last time the two squads met was on December 16, 2023, where Georgetown won in South Bend 72-68 in an overtime thriller. Drew Fielder  led a quintet of Hoyas in double figures as he came off the bench to tally a career-high 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting, including a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc.
  • Cooley holds a 3-1 record against the Fighting Irish and an 11-19 record against ACC opponents.
  • Georgetown holds an all-time record of 174-152 against teams currently in the ACC.
