Hoyas and Friars Battle for BIG EAST Title on Sunday

WASHINGTON - The fourth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will take on the second-seeded Providence College Friars in the BIG EAST Championship game on Sunday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. Kickoff is slated for noon. The game will be broadcast live on FS2 with Dave Ryan and Monika Moore calling the action.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown (10-4-5) is coming off of an exciting 2-1 overtime victory over top-ranked Akron on Thursday evening in the BIG EAST semifinals at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
  • The game winner came in the 99th minute on the first-career goal of freshman Aidan Godinho.
  • Earlier in the match, graduate student Marlon Tabora tallied his third goal of the season on a setpiece as GU came away with the upset victory.
  • On Tuesday, Tate Lampman was named Freshman of the Year marking the first Hoya to win the award since Derek Dodson in 2017.
  • Senior Maximus Jennings, sophomore Matthew Van Horn and junior Zach Zengue were all named First Team All-BIG EAST.  Senior Joe Buck, Lampman, junior Tenzing Manske and graduate student Marlon Tabora earned spots on the third team rounding out the Hoyas who were recognized.
  • Van Horn is leading the Hoya offense with six goals and three assists for 15 points on the season.
  • Freshman Mitchell Baker and Zengue follow just behind with 11 points apiece. Baker has four goals and three assists, while Zengue has managed three goals and five assists on the year.
  • Manske has seen a majority of the minutes in the net for the Hoyas. He holds a 0.60 goals-against average and a 0.791 save percentage to go along with 34 saves, a 9-4-2 record and nine shutouts for the year.
  • The Hoyas are leading the country in shutouts with 11, and Manske is ranked second in the nation in GAA.
  • The Hoyas are currently ranked No. 24 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and sit at No. 6 in the RPI.
About the Friars
  • Providence (12-4-3)  got here by defeating third seeded St. John's in extra time on Thursday by a score of 2-1.
  • Israel Neto scored the game winner in the first minute of overtime to send Providence to its seventh appearance in the BIG EAST Championship match.
  • Earlier in the match, Pearse O'Brien scored his first goal of the season to get the Friars on the board.
  • The Friars are currently 12-4-3 overall and ranked No. 25 in the nation.
  • This past week, Bernardo Prego earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Lukas Burns and Rodrigo Vaza, along with Bruno Rosa, made the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Diego Batista was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team.
Series Info
  • The Hoyas are 24-15-4 all-time against the Friars, and 4-1-1 in the BIG EAST Tournament.
  • The squads have met in the championship game on two occasions (2021, 2019) with the Hoyas coming out on top in both meetings.
  • Earlier this season, the Hoyas defeated Providence, 3-0, at Shaw Field in a regular season matchup.
  • In that game, all three goals came in the second half as Tabora, Zengue and Van Horn scored for the Blue & Gray.
