Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hoyas Cruise to 79-51 Victory Over Mount St. Mary’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort with four in double figures and all nine who saw action tallying points as the Hoyas defeated the visiting Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers 79-51 at Capital One Arena on Wednesday night. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 3-1 on the season while the Mountaineers slip to 3-2.

ON THE RECORD
"I want to congratulate Micah Peavy on scoring his 1,000th point and Thomas (Sorber) for having another double-double. I thought today our attention to detail was much better along with our defensive intensity. That was the whole thing that we worked on the last couple of days given our performance the first three outings. We purposely wanted to cut our rotation a little bit to get a little bit more chemistry and synergy, and I thought our young guys did a really good job. The Mount did a really good job with their pressure, so we had to prepare for that pressure. We wanted to attack their pressure, and I thought we did a better job in the second half." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"I think this group has the chance to become a really good defensive team. We just need a complete buy-in from everybody. Today I feel like we showed how well defensively that we can play and how much better we can get on that side of the ball." - Caleb Williams

"I think this week leading up to this game was all about preparation and how we were going to respond. This was really just an us battle, and we were really focused on ourselves. We were also focused on how we were going to respond and the attention to detail to win this game. It felt great to get the win." - Kayvaun Mulready

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jayden Epps led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures with 19 points on six made field goals, including a trio of triples.
  • Thomas Sorber added 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting to go along with a game-best 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
  • Micah Peavy chipped in 12 points while Malik Mack tallied 10 points to round out those in double figures.
  • Mack and Sorber paced the offense with five assists apiece.
  • Kayvaun Mulready came off the bench to lead the squad with three steals to his credit.
  • Georgetown shot 50.0% (32-64) from the field and tallied a season-best 46 points in the paint.
  • The Hoyas owned the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Mount 43-36.
  • GU forced 13 Mount turnovers on six steals, converting them into 13 points on offense.

MOUNT ST. MARY'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Terrell Ard Jr. led Mount St. Mary's with 12 points on 6-for-14 shooting. Ard Jr. reeled in six boards to go with four assists.
  • Jedy Cordillia led the squad on the glass with seven rebounds followed by Dola Adebayo with six.
  • The Mountaineers shot 31.3% from the floor (21-67) and 25.3% from behind the arc (5-19).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas got off to a hot start with a Sorber bucket followed by a Peavy triple to take the quick 5-0 lead. Every time the Mount inched back, the Blue & Gray found the answer and extended the lead to eight (11-3) after six unanswered capped by an Epps jumper.
  • Georgetown went on a tear and a 12-2 run over 3:37 fueled by nine points from Epps pushed GU to its largest lead of the game, 25-9, with 10:40 remaining.
  • The Blue & Gray would hit a cold spell on the floor and Mount St. Mary's would find a bit of offense to cut the deficit back to single digits (25-17). However, Georgetown found the answer again, and capped a 10-5 run to close the half with a Jordan Burks dunk just before the buzzer off a turnover. GU took a 35-22 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Hoyas came out of the break on a 10-3 run sparked by Hoya big man Sorber and Drew Fielder who combined for eight points early.
  • Georgetown would not let the foot off the gas and extended the lead to as many as 26 (58-32) following a traditional three-point play from Caleb Williams and a layup from Sorber.
  • The Hoyas cruised to the 79-51 victory at the final whistle.

OF NOTE
  • Peavy scored his 1,000th collegiate point in the second half with 12:28 remaining on a stepback jumper that bounced around the rim before dropping in. It was Peavy's second milestone in as many games as he grabbed his 500th career rebound against Notre Dame on Saturday, November 16.
  • When Georgetown held the Mount to 22 in the first half, it was the lowest point total in either frame thus far this season for the Mountaineers.
  • All nine Hoyas who made it into the rotation got into the scoring column.
  • Wednesday night's game marks the lowest point total that a Georgetown team has allowed in a game since its matchup against Creighton in the finals of the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament (73-48).
