Peavy and Epps Combine for 47 as the Hoyas Defeat Saint Francis 82-65

WASHINGTON – Micah Peavy (24) and Jayden Epps (23) combined for 47 points en route to Georgetown University's men's basketball team's 82-65 victory over the visiting Saint Francis University Red Flash. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-1 while the Red Flash slip to 2-5 on the season.

ON THE RECORD
"I thought that we got off to a really, really good start. A great start with our energy level as well. We went down twice in the game, but I thought it was our veterans that responded. In particular. I thought the game changed defensively with Micah and Jayden's energy and effort. The thing that I'm most proud of is how our team responded, particularly the last eight minutes of the game with what we did defensively, getting multiple deflections. We shortened our rotation in the second half purposely, just to try to create a little bit more chemistry on the floor. We made an in-game adjustment which I thought really changed their rhythm. Give them a lot of credit, they had two of their players down, and they played much better than they did in some of the games that we scouted. Ultimately, I saw a lot of growth in our team." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"I'm loving it here. I came to this school for that reason. I trusted Coach Cooley and he's been putting a lot of trust in me as a player. My teammates are giving me the ball, but we're also sharing the ball. We had [18] assists today." - Micah Peavy on recent offensive performances

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Micah Peavy led all scorers as he poured in 24 points on 10-for-20 shooting, including a 4-for-7 performance from beyond the arc. He added a season-best six helpers to pace the offense and tallied three rebounds and a trio of steals.
  • Jayden Epps added 23 points on a 7-for-17 performance from the floor, including four made 3-pointers, as well as six rebounds and three steals.
  • Malik Mack rounded out those in double figures with 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting, including a 3-for-4 effort at the charity stripe. Mack was the leader on the glass, grabbing seven rebounds, while also adding three steals on the day.
  • Thomas Sorber managed a career-high four blocks to go along with three steals, an efficient nine points (3-4 FG) and five rebounds.
  • Georgetown shot 43.5% (30-69) from the floor and 33.3% (9-27) from downtown.
  • The Blue & Gray were outrebounded 41-26 but the GU defense forced 20 SFU turnovers on 14 steals, converting them into 26 points on offense.

SAINT FRANCIS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Riley Parker and Bobby Rosenberger led the Red Flash with 20 points apiece.
  • Valentino Pinedo led Saint Francis on the glass with 11 boards to his credit.
  • SFU tallied 13 assists on 22 made shots.
  • The Red Flash went 11-for-15 at the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas jumped out to a quick lead with seven unanswered on a Drew Fielder layup sandwiched between a Peavy bucket and triple.
  • Georgetown staged a 12-0 run over 2:48 bookended by Mack buckets to take the 19-4 lead with 14:09 to play.
  • SFU started to chip away, cutting the deficit to single digits (21-12, 11:23) but a Peavy dunk on the Julius Halaifonua dish pushed GU's advantage back to 11.
  • The Red Flash staged a 10-0 run to make it a one-possession game (26-24) but an Epps three-point play gave the Hoyas some breathing room once again.
  • However, a 12-4 spurt for the Red Flash gave the visitors the 36-33 lead with 1:14 to play. In the final minute of action, Epps knocked down a trey, drew the foul and made his free throw for the four-point play as GU took a 37-36 lead into the locker room.
  • The second frame started much like the first with the Blue & Gray knocking down a quick seven behind a pair of Sorber buckets and an Epps 3-pointer in just over one minute of action.
  • Both teams traded triples with GU extending its lead to 10 (54-44) on another Epps trey with 14:44 remaining in regulation.
  • A 13-2 run from the Red Flash gave SFU the lead once again (57-56) before Epps drained a 3-pointer from the right side to push the Hoyas ahead 59-57 (8:36) and sparking a 26-8 run to close the game as Georgetown sealed the 82-65 victory at the final whistle.
