Georgetown to Face NC State in NCAA Second Round

WASHINGTON - The fourth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will face NC State University in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Georgetown men's soccer alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser back in the booth for their 20th season.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown is the fourth seed in the NCAA tournament, the program's 13th appearance in the tournament under Head Coach Brian Wiese.
  • The Hoyas won the program's sixth BIG EAST Championship on Sunday afternoon defeating the second-seeded Providence Friars, 2-1.
  • GU defeated top-seeded Akron by a score of 2-1 in overtime in the semifinal match, and also downed Creighton 1-0 last weekend in the quarterfinals at Shaw Field.
  • Maximus Jennings, Max Viera, Eric Howard and Tenzing Manske were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Howard was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player, while Viera earned Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
  • The Blue & Gray has been in the national rankings much of the year and is currently sitting at No. 24 in the country by the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll. The team is also ranked third in the RPI.
  • Tate Lampman was named Freshman of the Year marking the first Hoya to win the award since Derek Dodson in 2017.
  • Jennings, sophomore Matthew Van Horn and junior Zach Zengue were all named First Team All-BIG EAST.  Senior Joe Buck, Lampman, Manske and graduate student Marlon Tabora earned spots on the third team rounding out the Hoyas who were recognized.
  • Van Horn is leading the Hoya offense with six goals and three assists for 15 points on the season.
  • Zengue follows just behind with 13 points on three goals and seven assists.
  • Freshman Mitchell Baker has four goals and four assists rounding out the top three with 12 points on the year.
  • Manske has seen a majority of the minutes in the net for the Hoyas. He holds a 0.75 goals-against average and a 0.750 save percentage to go along with 38 saves, 10-4-2 record and nine shutouts for the year.
  • The Hoyas are leading the country in shutouts with 11, and Manske is ranked second in the nation in GAA.
About the Wolfpack
  • Niko Markovic scored his first collegiate goal to get the victory over Charlotte in double overtime in the Pack's (9-4-5) opening round match of the NCAA Tournament Thursday night.
  • The last time NC State reached the second round of the tournament was during the 2018 campaign.
  • Three players earned All-ACC honors at the conclusion of the regular season. Taig Healy and Hakim Karamoko were both second team selections, and Niko Markovic was named to the all-freshman squad.
Series Info
  • The Hoyas are 0-2 all-time against the Wolfpack, both contests were on the road.
  • The first meeting was a 2-0 Hoya loss during the 1993 season, and the second was a 2-1 loss the following year.
  • They have never met in the postseason.
Tournament Notes
  • Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the 13th under Head Coach Brian Wiese.
  • The Hoyas have been to the tournament on 14 previous occasions with nine trips to the Round of 16 (2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 1997) and five to the quarterfinals (2021, 2020, 2019, 2014, 2012).
  • The Hoyas won the national championship in 2019, downing Virginia in penalty kicks.
  • GU's last trip to the College Cup was in 2021 when the squad fell to the University of Washington 2-1 in the national semifinal.
  • In 2012, the squad was the national runner up, falling to Indiana 1-0 in the national championship game.
  • Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament.
  • The Hoyas are 19-10-6 overall in the NCAA Tournament.
  • This is the 11th time the Hoyas have earned a seeding in the tournament.
  • It is the second No. 4 seed that Georgetown has earned, the squad was the fourth seed in 2023.
