Women’s Basketball Opens the Season Against Virginia University-Lynchburg

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will open the 2024-25 campaign on Wednesday afternoon at McDonough Arena as the Hoyas host the Virginia University Lynchburg Dragons in a 4:30 p.m. matchup. The contest is the first in a doubleheader with the men who will tip off against Lehigh University at 7 p.m. For the third season in a row, ENGIE will be the presenting sponsor of the Hoya women's basketball squad this year.

About the Hoyas
  • Graduate student guard Kelsey Ransom earned BIG EAST Conference Preseason honors at the league's annual women's basketball media day held at Madison Square Garden in New York.
  • The Hoyas were also picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, receiving 66 points.
  • In 2023-24, Georgetown went 23-12 as well as 9-9 in conference play. It marked the most wins since the 2010-11 season, and the most conference victories since the 2018-19 campaign.
  • GU also had a run in the BIG EAST Tournament as the sixth-seeded Hoyas won three games in a row to advance to the BIG EAST championship game for the first time in program history.
  • The path to the championship also included a win over No. 21 Creighton marking GU's first win over a team ranked in the AP poll since 2016.
  • The Hoyas were then selected to participate in the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament marking the first postseason run since 2019. GU advanced to the second round of the tournament.
  • The Hoyas lost just two starters to graduation and return a talented group battling for minutes including Ransom, seniors Ariel Jenkins and Kaliyah Myricks, as well as juniors Victoria Rivera and Modesti McConnell.
  • GU has two graduate transfers in Chetanna Nweke from Princeton and Siobhan Ryan from Richmond.
  • The Blue & Gray brought in five newcomers as well including Jaeda Wilson, Jayden McBride, Alexia Araujo-Dagba, Khadee Hession and Amanda Ajobiewe.
  • This season, the Hoyas will host four nonconference games at McDonough Arena and head out on the road for seven contests including three neutral-site matchups.
  • Georgetown will once again host the UConn Huskies at the Entertainment & Sports Arena on January 11.
About the Dragons
  • With a new staff, Lynchburg has an entirely new squad from two seasons ago after not competing last season.
  • In 2022-23, the squad went 1-14 on the season.
  • Head Coach Marquis Lewis came to VUL from Harcum College out of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
  • In his two-year run from 2022-24, they competed in the NJCAA National Tournament for two-consecutive years.
