Peavy and Epps Combine for 41 to Lift Hoyas Past Creighton

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team defeated the Creighton Bluejays 81-57 on Wednesday evening at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. With the win, Georgetown improves to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST action while the Bluejays slide to 7-5 and 0-1 in conference play.

ON THE RECORD
"I thought our defense today was outstanding. I thought it's the best defensive effort that we've had since our tenure here. I just thought that our attention to detail and our preparation was outstanding. I thought Micah Peavy and Jayden Epps set the tone defensively with our on-ball pressure, our interior defense, and our ability to be disruptive. Creighton is one of the best offensive teams in the country and led by one of the best bigs. I'm just really proud of all of our guys that stepped onto the floor tonight and all of our guys that contributed to an incredible win. It feels really good to get a win at home." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"I? just think this win gives us a lot of confidence. Like Coach Cooley said, we're a young team, and it just shows everyone that we can compete with anybody." - Micah Peavy

"Coach told me that he needed me to step up big before the game. Micah and I? knew that we had to carry a bigger load and we knew that our other guys had to step up too. My number was called and I was just ready to go." - Jayden Epps

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Micah Peavy stuffed the stat sheet tallying 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. The graduate student shot 56.3% (9-16) from the floor.
  • For the second-straight game, Jayden Epps had a 20-point outing, recording 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting and a 5-for-6 effort from behind the arc. The junior chipped in three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
  • Curtis Williams Jr. came off the bench and notched a season-best 12 points on 4-for-6 made field goals while also pulling down two rebounds.
  • In the first start of his career, Caleb Williams matched Peavy's eight boards to lead the Hoyas on the glass.
  • Georgetown shot 62.5% from beyond the arc on 10-for-16 shooting and 55.0% (33-60) from the field.
  • The Hoyas dominated on the glass tallying 39 rebounds over Creighton's 25.
  • Georgetown forced 16 Creighton turnovers on 12 steals.
  • GU held the advantage inside, tallying 32 points in the paint to CU's 16.

CREIGHTON HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Georgetown got on the board first with a Thomas Sorber bucket. Another Sorber bucket followed by an Epps trey pushed the Hoyas up 7-3 early.
  • The score was knotted at nine before another Epps 3-pointer sparked a 15-6 run that featured a triple from Curtis Williams Jr. and was capped with a Sorber dunk to push the Blue & Gray ahead 23-15.
  • However, an 13-3 run for the visitors swung the lead in favor of the Bluejays (28-26) but GU closed the frame on eight unanswered to go into the break up 34-28.
  • Early in the second frame, a Creighton triple made it a one-possession game (36-33) but a 13-2 spurt that saw a banked triple from Drew Fielder and five straight from Peavy, including a traditional three-point play, pushed the Hoyas ahead 49-35.
  • A Bluejay trey stopped the bleeding but the Blue & Gray came right back with another seven unanswered, including back-to-back Peavy transition dunks off steals, to extend the lead to 18 (56-38) with 12:11 on the clock.
  • The Hoyas never relinquished the lead, sealing the 81-57 victory at the final buzzer.

OF NOTE
  • With seven steals to his credit, Peavy set a new Georgetown record for steals against Creighton. The previous record of four was set by Chudier Bile on Feb. 3, 2021 and matched by Jamorko Pickett on Feb. 9, 2021. The seven steals match his previous career best set earlier this season against Fairfield on November 9.
  • Epps scored his 1,000th point of his collegiate career on a 3-pointer to put the Hoyas up 52-38 with 13:44 remaining in the game.
  • This is the first time the Hoyas have won the BIG EAST opener since the 2018-19 season when they defeated Butler 84-76 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • The 24-point victory is the most in a BIG EAST regular season matchup since an 83-55 win over St. John's on Jan. 9, 2017.
