NEWARK, N.J. – The Georgetown University men's basketball team held on to defeat the Seton Hall University Pirates on Sunday evening at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey by a final score of 61-60. With the win, Georgetown improves to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST action, while the Pirates slide to 5-8 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
ON THE RECORD
"I think the injuries really hurt us in particular, right? We had lineups out there I've never seen even in practice, so it's a testament to our players that when their number was called, they were able to deliver, and we got the stop we needed to at the end, it wasn't pretty, but I'm very proud of our guys." -
Head Coach Ed Cooley
"They tell me before the game that they are going to be physical with me, because they know who I am, so I just try to keep my head in the game, you know, listen to my teammates, and just continue to keep playing my game. Don't mind the physicality." -
Thomas Sorber

- Jayden Epps added 15 points while Micah Peavy chipped in 10 to round out those in double figures.
- Peavy's five assists paced the offense while Drew Fielder and Sorber each tallied a pair of steals apiece.
- Georgetown shot 53.5% (23-43) from the floor and 33.3% (4-12) from deep.
- The Hoyas were outrebounded on the glass 39-32.
- GU managed six blocks in the game and held the 34-26 advantage in the paint.
SETON HALL HIGHLIGHTS
- Isaiah Coleman led the Pirate offense in scoring, tallying 25 points on 8-for-20 shooting. Coleman was the lone Pirate in double figures as Dylan Addae-Wusu was the next highest scorer with nine to his credit.
- Coleman also led the Pirates on the glass grabbing nine boards while Addae-Wusu and Chaunce Jenkins each brought down five apiece.
- SHU put up a 3-for-24 (12.5%) performance from behind the arc and went 20-for-67 (29.9%) from the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hoyas got off to a hot start, taking a 10-3 lead in the opening minutes with a Drew Fielder dunk forcing the early Pirate timeout at 16:02. The Hoyas extended the lead to 14-3 before Seton Hall would break up their scoring drought with a bucket.
- Georgetown continued to push and extended the lead to as many as 12, the first time on an Epps free throw (19-7) and again on a Peavy layup (21-9). However, SHU would not back down and continued to chip away, cutting the deficit to single digits.
- With less than a minute to play, a Pirate triple closed the gap to seven (30-23), but Sorber's bucket on a Caleb Williams dish gave the Hoyas a bit more breathing room. A Sorber block on the other end sent the teams into the locker room with the Hoyas up 32-23.
- Seton Hall came out of the locker room scrappy and knocked down to quick buckets before a Sorber bucket followed by a Caleb Williams trey pushed the lead back to double digits (37-27).
- The Pirates kept pushing, cutting the deficit to as few as four (43-39, 13:26) but a Sorber layup followed by a Peavy traditional three-point play gave the Hoyas some breathing room (48-39) with 11:46 to play.
- A Jordan Burks dunk on the fast break pushed the lead back to double digits but The Hall would not go away, tallying a 6-2 spurt to make it a two-possession game (55-49).
- The game got tense but a Curtis Williams Jr. 3-pointer silenced the hometown crowd. Another triple, this time from Caleb Williams, pushed the lead back to double digits (61-50) with 3:51 to play.
- The Pirates tallied 10 unanswered to close the game but it would not be enough as a defensive stop on the final possession helped Georgetown escape with the 61-60 victory at the final whistle.
OF NOTE
- With the win, the Hoyas start BIG EAST Conference play at 2-0, the first time a Hoya squad has achieved that feat since the 2015-16 season.
