Georgetown Men’s Basketball Faces West Virginia in Big 12-BIG EAST Battle

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia to face the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle on Friday night at WVU Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Blue & Gray enters Friday's contest with a 7-1 record following an 86-62 victory over UMBC on Monday night at Capital One Arena.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown heads into Friday's game at 7-1 following a 86-62 victory over UMBC on Monday night in the District.
  • Against UMBC on Monday night, Thomas Sorber led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures with 23 points on an efficient 6-for-7 performance from the floor. Jayden Epps (16), Malik Mack (13) and Caleb Williams (10) rounded out those in double figures.
  • Sorber leads the Hoyas in scoring with 15.8 ppg, followed by Micah Peavy with 14.8 ppg, Epps (13.9 ppg) and Mack (13.0 ppg). All four are ranked among the top 30 in scoring in the BIG EAST.
  • Sorber is GU's leader on the glass, grabbing 8.9 rpg, good enough to lead the BIG EAST. He is followed by Drew Fielder (5.3 rpg) and Mack (4.5 rpg). 
  • Peavy ranks third in the country and leads the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 3.38 pockets per game.
  • Sorber's three double-doubles to his name rank second in the league and among the top 30 nationally.
  • Defensively, the team ranks second in the league and sixth in the country in steals per game (10.8). Forcing opponents to commit 16.75 turnovers per game, the Hoyas rank 16th nationally and second in the BE.
  • Sorber was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the third time this season on Monday. Sorber averaged a double-double with 11.5 ppg and 10.0 rpg, while dishing out 5.0 apg in a 2-0 week for the Blue & Gray.
  • Peavy was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 19.5 ppg, 5.5 apg and 4.5 spg in a 2-0 week for the Blue & Gray. Peavy shot 56.5% (13-23) and 54.5% (6-11) from downtown.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who enters his 19th season as a collegiate head coach and his second with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • West Virginia enters Friday's matchup with a 5-2 record following an 83-76 victory over then-No. 24 Arizona on Friday, November 29 to cap off a 2-1 weekend at the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis. Tucker Devries led the way for the Mountaineers with 26 points on 8-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Toby Okani chipped in 20 points.
  • Javon Small leads West Virginia in scoring averaging 19.0 ppg, followed by Devries (14.9 ppg) and Amani Hansberry (12.6 ppg).
  • On the glass, Hansberry leads the Mountaineers with 7.6 rpg.
  • Head Coach Darian Devries enters his first season at the helm of West Virginia. Devries previously was the head coach of the Drake University Bulldogs, where he accumulated a 155-87 record and led the Bulldogs to two Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) championships and three NCAA tournament appearances.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH WEST VIRGINIA
  • Friday's game will be the 54th all-time meeting between the two teams dating back to 1922. GU holds the slight edge in the series 27-26.
  • The last time the two squads met was December 6, 2020 at McDonough Arena when the Mountaineers took the  80-71 win.
  • This will be the second time Coach Cooley has faced the Mountaineers in his career. He is 0-1 against the Mountaineers all-time following a 2012 meeting.
  • All-time, Georgetown holds a 48-44 record against schools currently in the Big 12 Conference. Cooley holds are 4-10 record against the conference.
